Once again we encounter the problem of Mitt being both insanely smart but optically challenged and kind of dumb on tone.

"I'm not concerned about the very poor." - those actual words - however out of context - actually left his lips in a CNN interview this morning.

Mitt, I can't type with my face in my palm this way.
Good grief. When listening to Mitt I'm often reminded of the W days when the awkwardness was uncomfortable, just hoping he didn't say something stupid. Not a great way to keep that Florida momentum going.

People make too big of a deal out of this stuff. Do people really base their vote out of little snippets taken out of context? This seems like something major to navel-gazing pundits, but the reality is that this will go the way of his "I like to fire people" line.
Part of it is based on academic grounds. Among major conferences, the Pac-10 is the best academically, largely because of Stanford, Cal and UCLA. “Colorado is on a par with Oregon,” he said. “Utah isn’t even in the picture.”

Political campaigns are about political rhetoric. No one cares about context....well at least most don't. Those two lines will be spliced and played over the airwaves for months before the election. When you are fighting in an election that could possibly come down to a couple states, it can make a difference.

Granted the poor would likely never get Mitt's vote anyway, but he should at least seem empathetic to them even in little snipets.
"Discipleship is not a spectator sport. We cannot expect to experience the blessing of faith by standing inactive on the sidelines any more than we can experience the benefits of health by sitting on a sofa watching sporting events on television and giving advice to the athletes. And yet for some, “spectator discipleship” is a preferred if not primary way of worshipping." -Pres. Uchtdorf

Newt and Obama will use that to their advantage which is why Romney needs to use Obama's words as quoted in my signature.

              • So do I understand right that Mitt has said he will propose and urge passage of a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage?

To be fair, I doubt he meant it.

Sad thing is that, substantively speaking, there's really nothing all that objectionable about what he said, but it's going to be a horrible soundbite. He's just bad at that.

Yeah that's the thing w/ Mitt - he'll often be right on the substance and just wildly wrong on tone and he's GOT to figure that out especially on this subject area.

                        • Romney said the "I like to fire people" line right after the Iowa caucuses. Rick Perry and Gingrich either started or intensified their Bain Capital attacks after he said that. Romney proceeded to trounce them in New Hampshire.

What were Gingrich and his shills talking about last night after the Florida win? Romney outspent Gingrich 5 to 1 (the number shifts all the time), he's nothing without his money, he only won by trashing Gingrich, etc. Now everyone is talking about a line taken out of context -- including Gingrich's people. So is Gingrich going to run to the left of Romney again because of this?

I'm certainly not saying that Romney is planning all of this, but at least it provides an unintentional benefit in the primaries. The unfocused, bipolar Gingrich may jump on it and then the primary voters will remember that Romney is the fiscal conservative.

BTW, I know a large percentage of the voters are stupid. But I don't think very many that would ever vote for a Republican are inclined to not vote for someone because of line taken out of context. Granted, Romney can't continue saying things like this, if a narrative were established if certainly would hurt him, but an off statement made every once in awhile isn't going to cause too much damage. Quite honestly, I think Romney's tendency to try to please all people all the time is more of a hindrance than the periodic gaffes.

                          • So how much does this gaffe hurt Romney? I'm thinking quite a bit. Not because of the stupid remark, but because today was supposed to be his real coming out party. The SS is scheduled to start protecting him. Everyone is saying Gingrich is done. Yada yada yada. Now they are all talking about the stupid comment.

It hurts not because of the soundbite (not yet) but because it takes the focus off of the huge win he had yesterday.

Romney was not going to get a coming out party. Most media are desperate for the race to continue - they won't be giving Romney any more credit than they have to until super Tuesday.
