  • The messiah complex is complete...

"If you love me, you gotta help me pass this bill."

What a pompous, megalomaniac. Politicians are selfish bastards to begin with, but Obama is the epitome of it's-about-me.

    Ridiculous.

I didn't read anything in there that indicative of Obamas belief that he is the Messiah.
    Fitter. Happier. More Productive.

You missed the point. IPU was tying to iterate that Jesus was all about Himself.

We cannot expect to experience the blessing of faith by standing inactive on the sidelines any more than we can experience the benefits of health by sitting on a sofa watching sporting events on television and giving advice to the athletes. You are always so negative. Instead you should focus on his ability to work a crowd, to totally rock a teleprompter, and his knack for shifting his cadence and vernacular to fit his locale and audience. In that instance he takes on a lilting Southern semi-drawl. In other places he effects a black preacher dialect and phrasing.

Not bad for a kid who was raised by his bank president grandmother and grew up in a gated white community in Hawaii.

I agree, his command of different registers there was quite impressive. I liked him a lot better in that speech then in any other speech I've seen him give. The spontaneity of "I love you back" and following up with "if you love me . . ." was a classic populist rhetorical device that showed his ability to work a crowd.

That was impromptu. While I can't stand him policy's and his arrogance at times.. In this case he was stirring the crowd..

Now, do we have a GOP that can match this and better him?? I hope so because his "Made in America" was nice to hear even though he really doesn't mean it..

I am not a fan of jingoistic nationalism* as it usually leads to a great increase in pain and suffering. Hitler and Mussolini were masterful public speakers who stoked the fires of nationalism. Strong public speakers typically are able to gather increasingly larger amounts of power under their command.

Oh, and he absolutely DOES want products to be 'made in America'. He simply doesn't understand the economics of WHY we are decreasingly capable of manufacturing (multi-generational drive to steer our children away from blue collar jobs, increase of constrictive regulations - not always a bad thing but they have an effect, volatility in the market and future uncertainty of tax and regulatory structure, etc).

*Nationalism and Patriotism are not strictly synonyms. Patriotism is the act of standing up for what is right, even if it goes against the best interest of your country. Nationalism is standing up for the best interests of your country, even if the position is clearly wrong.

Actually, that speech segment reminds me of Paul Stanley in the beginning of this song:

Just as long as it's not in a right to work state.

He kind of does. My company got a really big grant but we got most of the "made in USA" stuff waved by the DOE. He says it, but when the actual contracts are signed those provisions are often waved.
