I see what you're saying, but I've always thought that government shouldn't be in the jobs creation business. Government should be in the "get out of the way and let private business create jobs business." It seems government is much better at killing jobs than creating them.

Obama has nothing to do with this. This is yet another example of how corporations really run the country.

...and that the Federal government is complicit (even beyond lawmakers). It makes absolutely no difference who controls congress and who is in the White House, because this is the way we roll in the US of A. Bigger campaign contributors receive more of the largesse, and companies will find a way to thrive in the environment, as dictated by government agencies.

Besides, EVERYBODY who has ever gone to school in Utah should be forced to learn about the effects of the (Esteemed Senator of Utah, Reed) Smoot-Hawley tariffs and protectionism. To be honest, we cannot survive a trade war with China and GE may have been forced to comply.
That is just it. The reality is that in this country in this day and age there are very few decent blue collar laborer type jobs that a kid can walk into and earn a liveable wage. I know the mighty "Green Jobs" revolution was going to take care of that little issue in our country, but alas it has yet to materialize. Without an education in this country you are on the road to poverty. We have run every printing press full bore for the past 2+ years to make the dollar worth even less othan ne Senine or two Senums, but we still are unable to get our products cheap enough to export. It appears to me those countries that allow their old people to eat dog food have a serious competitive advantage in the unskilled labor that we are not likely to overcome anytime soon.

A lot of people have this romantic vision of manufacturing jobs as if they alone and the departure thereof signals economic failure.

The US economy has had to deal with major transitions in the past and it's also dealt with foreign competitors in the past and it has always come out on top. Japan was supposedly spelling our doom and the US manufacturers of televisions and 80s style boom boxes were destroyed. Since that time, Japan's economy has stagnated. China in the upcoming decades is going to dealing with a horrendous demographic shift as its one child policy catches up with it. Fewer workers means higher wages, but the bigger problem has to do with the fact that one child will have to support two parents.

Let GE try to develop airplanes in China. Honda has taken over a decade to get its little jet ready to go. Boeing has been kicking Airbus's ass. The Chinese so far have shown very little engineering prowess. I think we would have more cause to be worried if GE partnered up with Japan or Germany. The engineering gap between the West (and Japan) and the rest of the world is pretty huge. The Iranians haven't figured out something that we figured out almost 70 years ago (and we more or less created it from scratch and the Germans probably weren't that far behind). Of course with that said, GE is one of the few manufacturers of jet engines so China has a pretty good start.
Part of it is based on academic grounds. Among major conferences, the Pac-10 is the best academically, largely because of Stanford, Cal and UCLA. “Colorado is on a par with Oregon,” he said. “Utah isn’t even in the picture.”

BFD. GE has partnered in the past with EADS, as has Northrup Grumman. This is no different. Il Pad is just whining. I bet he kept quiet when this administration shut down the GE F35 alternative engine program.

I say this with love, robin
I don't disagree, and nothing in my previous post suggests otherwise. Like I said, I think we need to be able to test whether or not the government has become captive, and then we need to figure out what to do about it. You basically assume that it is captive, and that banning Corp donations will fix it. I think you might be right, but I don't think we will ever find the political will to fix the problem as long as we haven't officially identified the scope of the problem.
