  • First it was GE Healthcare...

Now it's GE's avionics division. Immelt is creating jobs in China to compete with Boeing. And he is Obama's job czar? WTH?

Any Obama defenders care to defend this?

Side note in this article: a "summon wuap" reference.

This is Chrony Capitalism at its finest. The new model for success in America is to position the company as close to the government as possible to steer legislation and/or international relations to the benefit of the company, and against the company's competitors.

The twisting of government regulations to solely benefit one's own company to the detriment of said company's competitors is entirely anti-free market to its core, and no TRUE capitalist can support it. This is NOT 'Capitalism'.

p.s. you forgot 'Smartgrid'. GE owns that as well.

Combine this with the fact that the NLRB (made up mostly of Obama appointees right now) is blocking Boeing from building a plant in South Carolina that will manufacture some of Boeing's Dreamliners and it looks really bad.

So let me get this straight, Boeing doesn't layoff any of its workforce in Seattle (not a right to work state) and it wants to increase manufacturing capacity in South Carolina (a right to work state) and that is deemed to be retaliation against the union in Seattle. But GE can enter into a joint venture with China to become a direct competitor with Boeing and GE's CEO is Obama's point man on the jobs committee?
Part of it is based on academic grounds. Among major conferences, the Pac-10 is the best academically, largely because of Stanford, Cal and UCLA. “Colorado is on a par with Oregon,” he said. “Utah isn’t even in the picture.”

Yes, Smartgrid is another great example.

You need to remember that Obama is not a capitalist, otherwise this kind of crap wouldn't be happening.

Yep. This administration really does think jobs are important, doesn't it?

It goes far deeper than just the president. I can almost guarantee you the same thing would be happening under a Pres McCain and would probably even happen under a Pres. Romney. This is the direction of the entire fed government, a seachange that has been building for decades.

Ironically this is similar to Hitler's economic thinking, wherein the companies remained private but worked for and in close conjunction with the government.

Exactly. When this crap happens under Republicans, the party faithful call Chinese labor a 'market efficiency.' But under a democratic leader the GOP faithful call it 'crony capitalism.' What both the left and the right need to figure out is, how can we figure out whether or not our federal government has become captive to private enterprise, and what can we do about it.

You make a great point about it not mattering who is in the White House. Nobody is immune to cronyism. My anger about this is how Obama claims that American jobs are important to him, yet his actions say otherwise and only those labeled as far-right nutjobs are the ones who point this out. When the hell will the mainstream media stop protecting Obama? I digress.

I don't understand the issue. GE owns some technology and they've chosen to share it with a Chinese owned company?

The issue is that the CEO of GE is Obama's job czar. He's supposed to be creating jobs in the US as jopbs czar. If he wants to create jobs in China, that's fine, but he should resign from his appointed government position to do that.

I want to know if GE has any unionized labor. If it does, I want to know why GE is retaliating against its unionized labor by shipping jobs and manufacturing overseas to China.

Both sides (Ds and Rs) are playing each other against the middle (us lowly citizens). It is reprehensible.

I disagree. Such a move is a reflection of isolationism and trying to protect US jobs from the world economy is not going to accomplish that objective. We need to become more competitive. If old people in China are willing to eat dog food, perhaps we might want to consider a dietary change? Clearly, the reality is certain jobs will not be performed again in the US unless we accept that the standard of living of those performing those jobs are going to decrease in comparison to what US factory workers made 1950-1980. Regardless, I am not a fan of populisitic isolationism in the name of political gain. There are long term trends at play here that transcend politics and using long term trends to score political points does not get the real issue into the discussion.

Bingo. Who wants to make shirts all day for $1.27/hr, or work this fast without filing a union or OSHA grievance for carpal tunnel syndrome?

But in this case, why is a company who is a significant manufacturer of military hardware (including jet engines, guidance systems, and instrumentation) giving tech to China? The potential for a breach of classified info is high. Remember Hitachi gave highly-classified design info for submarine propellors to Russia back in the '80s.

I can accept that for Defense contracts the work should be done in the US for security reasons. I also want to make it clear that I am not supporting chrony capitalism or the hypocrisy of the Obama administration. I just believe that the US economy will be better benefitted by emphasizing competitiveness instead of isolationism.

That is the conundrum. In the vast majority of repetitive manufacturing jobs we are extremely uncompetitive.

But in the high-tech fields and on highly sophisticated, high-dollar equipment (think airplanes or intellectual property such as computer hardware or software designs) we stand alone.

Besides, EVERYBODY who has ever gone to school in Utah should be forced to learn about the effects of the (Esteemed Senator of Utah, Reed) Smoot-Hawley tariffs and protectionism. To be honest, we cannot survive a trade war with China and GE may have been forced to comply.
