  • Jobs lost in our county.

Our county is divided by a large desert. The north end, where I live, and the south end are equally populated. Mining and agriculture drive our economy. We strip-mine bentonite, which is used for drilling, and gypsum, used for sheetrock. Demand for both commodities has fallen dramatically.

In the last three months, the north end of the county has seen 150 people lose their jobs. To give you an idea of the significance, there are an estimated 2,333 jobs in the north end of the county. That means that, in 90 days, we've lost 6.7% of our jobs. Ugly.

That is terrible! Really awful. But do you think this means that the price of drywall is going to go down? Because it got a little crazy there for a while, and I have this remodeling project I am supposed to finish...

The controller for the drywall plant is a friend of mine. He says they can't compete with the Canadians right now. Orders are virtually non-existent.

It's coming on this side too. The mines seem to be holding their own, but methane is in the crapper (ha!) and the contractors (and the jobs they create) are starting to go belly up. As are a few of the smaller production companies.

And now a small quibble: To say "divided by a large desert" suggests that there are lush and verdant areas in the northern and southern part of the county. And while relatively speaking I suppose that is true, to those unfamiliar with the area this is more than a little misleading.

Oh and south BHC rules, north BHC drools! Go south county!

Ever since Buffalo Bill sold his water rights to the Mormons, our end of the county has blossomed like a rose. Southenders have always been jealous.

I'd always heard you people bankrupted him and then stole the rights.

"Stole" is such a subjective term. Three beaver pelts and a buckskin jacket was very fair compensation, imo.

Poor old BB, he died penniless in Denver thanks to you folks. He spent his final days in one saloon or another telling stories in exchange for a drink or a meal

I will give you north county folk some credit though, at least you don't steal corpses (as far as I know anyway.) The citizens of Denver felt the need to pour six tons of concrete on BB's grave to prevent those perverts over in Park from stealing his body and taking it back to Cody.

Why can't they compete with the Canadians?

He blames the exchange rate. Most of our stuff was being shipped to Canada when housing started to slow, but the Canadians have the shipping advantage on us with the dollar trading at these levels.
