  • Tornado in MO

I was looking for video on the Joplin, MO tornado tonight and came across the post below. There is not much to see; audio does go throughout however. The recording is of 18 people crammed into the back of what looks like a convenience store as the tornado rolls over them.

Some of the woman's heavenly petitions may get repetitive, but it's startling to hear people express love for each other, as if it may be their last occasion to do so. At the very end of the clip you can see the roof/wall has come off the place.

We have some friends that live there. Fortunately they are safe. She said on her facebook page that she went through town to look for some friends and she said the devastation is worse than the pictures.
What's to explain? It's a bunch of people, most of whom you've never met, who are just as likely to be homicidal maniacs as they are to be normal everyday people, with whom you share the minutiae of your everyday life. It's totally normal, and everyone would understand.

This used to be the LDS chapel in Joplin.

listening to Joplin radio is interesting as its basically turned into an emergency communications center -- announcing names of injured taken to hospitals, callers offering their services, homes, barns , tips on travel, location of down power lines etc...etc...

A great example of a community bonding together and taking action in a time of need.

I remember living near the Nickel Mines, PA massacre in 2006 and the surrounding communities did the same thing, to the extent the amish would allow.

My heart goes out to the people of Joplin. These things happen every year but they seem to be especially devastating this year. The psychological trauma that the communities experience lasts for years.

I heard that there were people inside the church when it hit, but they all went to the baptismal font and are accounted for.

Did you read the NYT article about the kid being sucked out of the sunroof of an SUV on his way home from High School graduation?

            Absolutely unbelieveable.

Nevermind, found another article. That is crazy stuff. You only think of stuff like this happening in movies.

Very 2012ish, no? By the way, I can't believe I wasted 3 hours of my life watching that stupid movie.

I have a childhood friend who moved to Joplin 10 years ago. His house, his garage (where he ran his mechanic shop business) and both is cars are gone. Totally leveled. Very sad.

Something is fishy about that story. I'm not buying.

My wife was on her way to Kansas City this morning to visit her sister. Got to the Raleigh airport and they cancelled her flight and re-booked her for tomorrow. Crazy!

                          Could it be this?

Sara said her father, who was knocked unconscious, watched in horror as his son was pulled into the storm.

presumably he was knocked unconscious after the car flipped over.

You skeptics are welcome to come hang out in Oklahoma or Kansas next May. Or go door-to-door in Tuscaloosa and explain how you doubt the power of the storms. This stuff has been happening forever, just usually to a few dozen at a time. It's only getting national attention because the casualty counts are crazy high this year.

It's not that I don't believe the physics are possible. Something just seems off about the story to me.
