I've said it before, and I'll say it again.

It's almost always those blowhards (pun intended) in EQ meeting, combined Priesthood Mtg,,,,,you know the ones,,,,,they're always the loudest in offering their opinion to anyone and everyone who, by virtue of sitting there, is forced to listen to the same morons every single week.

It's the guy going on and on about how "last night I was in my den studying my scriptures, and the TV was way too loud, so I walked out to the living room and was shocked that the show my Daughter was watching on the Disney Channel was just chock full of less than dressed Hannah Montana types.....it was appalling the porn they subject these kids too."

Yes that's a real example. It's hypocritical aholes like this kid that are deep into porn and their wives are clueless and they think they have everyone fooled. It's sad because there are Eliot Spitzer types like this in every ward.

This brings light to the description of the classic western hero depicted by the great Louis L'Amour as lean with broad shoulders and narrow hips. Contrary to widely held belief, this physique wasn't the result of countless hours of manual labor. Rather, it was an allusion; and a swollen neck and gaunt condition akin to a rutting buck led people to assume that the cowboy had a boxer's build.

Montana folk have probably figured out that the real thing beats the hell out of porn.

Who knows why Utah is really #1? Is it people getting married too early and finding out later they should have held out for something better? Is it due to weird attitudes about sex so married people don't let go?

Or is it the elephant in the room? Utah has a bunch of single LDS men not having sex, so they start viewing porn. Aren't younger men also more likely to have access to high bandwidth internet than other groups? Is there any doubt that Utah also has the highest proportion of single men in the country who are not having sex? Why should these results really surprise anyone?

Part of it is based on academic grounds. Among major conferences, the Pac-10 is the best academically, largely because of Stanford, Cal and UCLA. “Colorado is on a par with Oregon,” he said. “Utah isn’t even in the picture.”

Why should this surprise anyone? Why??? Because we claim to be the one true religion, the surest key to joy in this life and the one after. Let's assume you're right--that this is a function of a lot of young men who are looking at porn instead of having sex. Do you think that's healthier? Do you think it's better for young virgin men to be looking at--paying to look at (thus pouring money into an industry that objectifies and occasionally abuses women)--porn, creating this completely unrealistic expectation of women that could prevent them from ever participating in a healthy relationship? I don't think we should hammer small indulgences into pornography as hard as we do, but we do need to look at this rationally. These guys are paying for something they could get for free, if only the smaller (healthier) doses were satisfying them.

I hope the Church leadership is looking at this really seriously. You combine this with the study that finds Utah residents to be the highest users of antidepressants (admittedly, I've never actually seen this study, but I love urban legend like the next guy) and you get a pretty disturbing picture. Our Gospel of joy works pretty well, as long as you can pay for porn and take antidepressants. I know people say that others just self-medicate with alcohol. I'm sorry--if it comes down to a choice between spending 3+ hours a week and 10% of my income and taking antidepressants vs a little self-medication with alcohol, I'll choose the latter, thanks.

There are plenty of us in the "healthy" camp--we're not looking at porn, we're not drinking, we're not taking antidepressants. But there are plenty who for some reason, are not getting the blessings that they deserve from the Gospel. We as a culture and Church should be seriously considering that fact and not just writing it off as "oh well, what do you expect?"
At least the Big Ten went after a big-time addition in Nebraska; the Pac-10 wanted a game so badly, it added Utah

Interesting reactions. There are weaknesses in the study, for sure. Some of those criticisms are strong, some weak. But it is still a fascinating result.

Here is a summary from the Des News:

As you may recall, Utah consistently comes out #1 in porn-related internet searches.

Big shocker that Utah is chock full of religious hypocrites.
So where do the mormon religious hypocrits live? Bountiful, Draper, Sandy, South Jordan, Orem, Provo. Are their zip codes in the top 10. No it's the liberal bastian at the UofU (84112) and the union folks in Bingham, Sevier, etc.

Or was I reading the wrong zip codes. The difference between some Utahn's is that they look it up on the internet, Cali's go down to the corner magazine shop with their quarters or go to Hollywood and watch it on stage.
