Chill Moli, I didn't even say I was against this center. I was saying that it's understandable why people would have problems with data centers depending on the companies they are attached to. I do not think it's naive to be concerned about these technocrats, I think it's foolish not to.

If this is attached to Palantir and Peter Thiel, I would oppose it. That is separate environmental concerns. I trust JL when he says the water complaints are overblown.

      • The Shark Tank is blaming "Chinese sleeper cells," for opposing his data center in Box Elder.

Stuff like that makes it hard to put trust in these types.

You have a hard time believing Chinese engage in strategic propaganda?

The misinformation and fear-mongering are off the charts. I would be shocked if china were not feeding it to some degree.

Of course I know foreign are engage in influence operations. I expressed related thoughts. See my consistent criticism of Tucker Carlson. I think Russia has set the standard for this crap (globally, not only in the US) and others are acting similarly.

I think those upset people were Utahns not Chinese agents. You actually believe the Shark Tank guy?

You have a hard time believing that the majority of Utahns are suspicious of this project without outside influence? The way this has been railroaded? That fact that we are already in energy and water crises, and the data center will be using copious amounts of each? Then you get O'Leary making clearly false accusations that protesters are being paid, or that the main source is Chinese influence?

These guys are not winning the PR battle, at least with anyone not wearing a red hat.

I have no doubt the Chinese are manipulating information channels to foment antagonism towards American data center construction.

That is absolutely not the same as sleeper agents being protestors.

In isolation, any project that is initially estimated to use more than all the current state's power usage with the fantastical claim of making a drought-ravaged lake even better would invite a lot of skepticism. Add in a huckster-like personality as the hype guy and everyone involved should be cooling their jets.

There's already enough to be concerned here, without other countries' disinformation campaigns (which I wouldn't be surprised if there was a component of that).
"...you pointy-headed autopsy nerd. Do you think it's possible for you to post without using words like "hilarious," "absurd," "canard," and "truther"? Your bare assertions do not make it so. Maybe your reasoning is too stunted and your vocabulary is too limited to go without these epithets."

The Chinese are absolutely doing what he's saying.

I absolutely agree. There should be concern. The problem seems to be that the concern being expressed is just misplaced and badly argued. If the power to run the data center isn’t even connected to the electric grid managed by the utility, why do people think the center will raise energy costs? Could it have an impact on natural gas prices? Maybe, but we have several generations worth of natural gas…companies in Texas sometimes pay people to take gas off their hands as they have no where to use it.
"Discipleship is not a spectator sport. We cannot expect to experience the blessing of faith by standing inactive on the sidelines any more than we can experience the benefits of health by sitting on a sofa watching sporting events on television and giving advice to the athletes. And yet for some, “spectator discipleship” is a preferred if not primary way of worshipping." -Pres. Uchtdorf

                          • The anti-data center hysteria is exactly like the the anti-fracking hysteria of a few years ago.
