GE through lobbying doesnt pay any taxes in the USA.
Lets get the fair tax implemented. It would be the biggest boon to the economy ever seen.

I understand. But your plug for the fair tax here is that it would massively increase corporate taxes for tax-evading companies like GE. Rather than celebrate the fact that GE has realized a GOP dream, the legal minimization of taxes, you are arguing for the Fair Tax as a way of massively INCREASING TAXES.
Cool. I agree that taxes should be massively increased for GE. I'm just pointing out that there are several ways to do that. And if the Fair Tax lacks the political support to pass it, well it isn't the only way to massively raise GE's taxes.

Sorry if you misunderstand me. What irks me about GE is that they arent paying taxes like everyone else simply because they have good lobbyers and a great tax team. Under the fair Tax every corp would not pay any income tax and wouldl be on the same footing at GE. That is the difference I am espousing. It would foster competition of who built better products not who has the most friends in congress to give them tax breaks.

so, as I understand it, corporations would then be paying based on their consumption to produce goods. If that is so, then it basically becomes a value added tax. I'm not in favor of that.

Knock it off. This board has enough problems without a dose of middle-age lechery.

Now you are just sounding like a whining hippie. GE IS paying taxes like everyone else. Everyone else is free to hire good lobbiests and a great tax team. If GE isn't breaking the law, they are simply doing what every mom and pop in this country is free to do themselves. Why do you want to punish GE for being good at what they do?

I'm not even close to a hippy. i am a capitalist. what they are doing is not capitalism. its cronyism.

Capitalism has never existed in a political vacuum. Navigating the political/regulatory environment is no different than navigating the labor environment. It is just one more thing that successful capitalists will ALWAYS have to do, and good capitalists are good at it. Calling it cronyism doesn't make it any less a part of capitalism.

you must like arguing things you don't get.

I like the fairtax idea (although I agree with Robin that it seems to have little to do with corporate taxation), but I think that most people would be pretty surprised at how little taxes they pay right now. It really is a regressive tax, even with the poverty line pre-bate. I like the idea of taxing consumption, however.
I also see huge enforcement issues in the future as more and more business is conducted online. I'm sure there are mechanisms to address this, but I imagine they would be pretty disadvantageous to US based online retailers.
