I take issue with your third assertion. Racism, race riots, and bigotry exist everywhere.

You will note that I said highest CONCENTRATION of those offensive folks.

As for everything else, I can appreciate the beauty of the land. Maybe you have something.

I was born in Alabama, the #2 ranked Southern state in the country. From there I moved to Georgia, clearly the top Southern state of them all, according to any metric you want to use. I lived there until age 19, a two year stay in Costa Rica, back for another two years in Atlanta. Five years in the lone and dreary world of Utah, and then five years in Louisiana, only fifth ranked in Southerness, but still part of the Confederacy. From there to South Carolina, last in rankings due to sparse population and all those Yankees at Hilton Head and Myrtle Beach, but bold enough to fire first.

I eat grits. I think sweet cornbread and cole slaw are abominations. Coca-Cola is the only soft drink that matters and a pronoun for any other drink; I like Ted Turner; I like "Dixie;" I know all the words to "Georgia on my Mind;" I can impersonate a cacophony of katydids; I know what a crappie is; I get misty when Stonewall Jackson talks to Jim on Christmas Eve in Gods and Generals; I could go on and on.

The South is my favorite place I've ever been.
I have to admit, I was born in Nevada (Battle Born), raised in New Jersey (Yankee), and live in Utah. I have no idea what the hell you are talking about. I don't even recognize some of those words as being American and what does Shoeless Joe Jackson have to do with Gods and Generals?

          Southern to me is KFC.

              You completely left off magnolias.
What's to explain? It's a bunch of people, most of whom you've never met, who are just as likely to be homicidal maniacs as they are to be normal everyday people, with whom you share the minutiae of your everyday life. It's totally normal, and everyone would understand.

I'm with you on the literature. Flannery O'Connor is my favorite author. Southern Gothic/Grotesque is my favorite genre.

Did you ever think that the cost of living is low because no one wants to live there?

What is so great about the South? Barbeque.

You should come down here (or maybe, as Tim mentioned, some place that is more properly southern), since there is nothing a Southernor enjoys more than hating a self-righteous and stereotyping liberal yankee. They would love you.

Yeah, I don't have a problem with this song anymore, and I read my words and remember feeling that way, but all I feel now is disappointment in my former self, kind of like reading my journals from when I was a teenager. I love them, but I cringe constantly at how certain I was of EVERYTHING, and how wronged I seemed to feel about things that wouldn't even register with me nowadays.

First graders. I can't decide whether to be offended, upset, indifferent. I can't decide whether to tell her to not sing it. I can't begin to tell her why.

The line, "White man on the bus" just bothers me. My house does not allow racist talk and points out to my kids why such behavior in others isn't Christlike. And then the government-sponsored curriculum gives us this shit.
Watched an episode about that on Drunk History. Pretty interesting.
