    Mostly agree with this.

Yes it is true that even if we cut off greenhouse gases 100%, the earth will continue to warm substantially due to current gas levels. It is also true that we do not currently have the technology to solve the problem. But we certainly could invest in developing the technology and we could make efforts that would make a substantial difference, even without completely solving the problem. The difficulty is that the investments we make would primarily benefit future generations, not ours. It is extraordinarily difficult to get people to make that kind of sacrifice or even to agree on what should be done.

If I had to guess, I predict that we will not have the collective will to make any changes or investments until the impact of climate change is so overwhelming and so dramatic that even anti-science dudes like topper, BYU71 and CMBF will give in. But that may take 50 years.

I am not sure what you are talking about. There isn't a reputable climate scientist out there providing a single answer. They are all engaged in probabilistic analyses involving ensembles.

I swear I saw a post-apocalypse movie recently that started out like this. Was it that stupid train movie?

      • Florida faces the greatest risk from GW (flat and low elevation). But they have figured out a creative way to deal with it: fine state employees who even mention the phrase:

        http://secondnexus.com/ecology-and-s...ange/?ts_pid=2

In a complaint against the state, worker says he was accused of violating policy and instructed to get a mental health evaluation after mentioning climate change.
An employee of Florida’s environmental protection department was forced to take a leave of absence and seek a mental health evaluation for violating governor Rick Scott’s unwritten ban on using the phrases “climate change” or “global warming” under any circumstance, according to a complaint filed against the state.
        Nice job, Florida.

        • Just went to lunch with a buddy and he was listening to a Buck Sexton podcast, I gathered the following:

Scientists are asking for a 20% variance in model projections
Even if scientist are right it's only 1 degree increase and what can that do
Scientists were wrong about an ice age in the 70's
Scientists want to drive the U.S. economy into the ground
Ultimately they are trying to create a redistribution of wealth to all humans alive

Felt like reading a CMBF post.

One of the grandest benefits of the enlightenment was the realization that our moral sense must be based on the welfare of living individuals, not on their immortal souls. Honest and passionate folks can strongly disagree regarding spiritual matters, so it's imperative that we not allow such considerations to infringe on the real happiness of real people.

                • In 2009, James Hansen, the Director of the Goddard Institute, and reportedly one of the leading scientific voices on climate change, warned President Obama he only had four years to save the earth from the devastating consequences of global warming. I assume either President Obama took decisive action of which I'm unaware and averted disaster for the earth or it's too late and we are doomed. When Hansen's doomsday hyperbole is patently wrong, it doesn't help the climate change cause. Folks have trouble accepting the climate change science when one of its leading proponents makes these kind of over the top failed predictions.

Barack Obama has only four years to save the world. That is the stark assessment of Nasa scientist and leading climate expert Jim Hansen who last week warned only urgent action by the new president could halt the devastating climate change that now threatens Earth. Crucially, that action will have to be taken within Obama's first administration, he added.

Soaring carbon emissions are already causing ice-cap melting and threaten to trigger global flooding, widespread species loss and major disruptions of weather patterns in the near future. "We cannot afford to put off change any longer," said Hansen. "We have to get on a new path within this new administration. We have only four years left for Obama to set an example to the rest of the world. America must take the lead."

Hansen said current carbon levels in the atmosphere were already too high to prevent runaway greenhouse warming. Yet the levels are still rising despite all the efforts of politicians and scientists.

He seems to be prone to hyperbole, but the title and intro to the article are misleading. He didn't say that climate change would consume the world in four years. He said:

"We have to get on a new path within this new administration. We have only four years left for Obama to set an example to the rest of the world. America must take the lead."
                      Big difference.

I guess he figured Obama would be a one-term wonder and didn't count on him getting re-elected.

                      • In the full interview, Hansen is quoted as saying the earth is in "imminent peril." Not sure what he intended by the expression "imminent peril," but it sure makes it sound like quick action has to be taken to avert disaster for the earth.

                            Plot

In 2014, an attempt to counteract global warming through climate engineering catastrophically backfires, resulting in an ice age so severe that nearly all life on Earth is killed. The only survivors are the inhabitants of the Snowpiercer, a massive train powered by a perpetual-motion engine that travels on a globe-spanning track. A class system is installed, with the elites inhabiting the front of the train and the poor inhabiting the tail.

I know I am not the eminent authority dealing with science on this board. However, I am pretty sure the Dinosaurs went extinct around 1370 not 1970. As usual it was man't fault. Man brought about the black plague ( I think it is more PC to call it the black death) in the mid 1300's which eventually spread to the Dinosaurs which wiped them out.
