"Discipleship is not a spectator sport. We cannot expect to experience the blessing of faith by standing inactive on the sidelines any more than we can experience the benefits of health by sitting on a sofa watching sporting events on television and giving advice to the athletes. And yet for some, “spectator discipleship” is a preferred if not primary way of worshipping." -Pres. Uchtdorf

    • I just saw a headline that Floridians can't be that happy about. It states they have been lucky as a hurricane hasn't made landfall in over 10 years, but things are about to change.

I remember after Katrina the global warmer folks (they hadn't switched to climate change yet) were warning of the coming intense hurricanes that were going to come. Not only were they going to be intense but far more frequent. I don't remember for sure, but something about the Oceans heating up.

Another brilliant call by the scientific community. Now, scientists make more good calls than bad ones and have added greatly to the wonderful life we have here on earth. However, anyone who regurgitates everything the scientific community says as being case closed and fact has their heads securely in an awkward position.

I wouldn't say the reduction of hurricanes in a specific region refutes the far larger point of oceanic or even global warming. I think the case is pretty well settled that the earth is warming up due in part to anthropogenic causes (but I sort of admire those who soldier on in denying it). What isn't known with precision is all the effects that will result from that warming, since this is truly unprecedented in human history. So if the scientists are off as to a specific area or to a brief time period, that doesn't change my overall concern about what's going on.

This lightweight article was disturbing, in part because I saw firsthand a couple of months ago what they're talking about.

It probably is warming and in part due to humans. My problem is more with the Dr who takes off someones arm because of a wart on the guys wrist. Sure it could be cancer and become far worse, but the Dr. doesn't know that.

Neither does the scientific community and all their projections of what will or won't happen. That was my point. They predicted more frequent and intense hurricanes. They were dead wrong and I am glad I didn't sell everything I own in Florida because of their predictions.

Our concerns are different. I think your side is doing a better job of scaring people.

But I think pointing out a short-term inaccuracy in one prediction misses the far larger issue. Are you suggesting we don't have to be doing anything (if, indeed, there is anything that realistically CAN be done--I'm unsure) about global warming because there have been fewer than the predicted number of hurricanes? Frankly, pointing out such relatively trivial errors reminds me of the Far Side cartoon where a soldier, defending a fort that is ablaze and under siege, reads a message that was attached to an arrow he removed from his dead comrade's back. The soldier declares triumphantly, "Ha! The idiots spelled 'surrender' with only one 'r'!"

I guess I don't consider prediction of frequent Katrina's as trivial. The soldier analogy was humorous though

If you post something correct in this thread, it will be the first time. You might want to read this before posting again about hurricanes in order to save yourself further embarrassment:

Does the condescending attitude help make your point. I'm leaving to a baseball game and I'll read that later. If I think it's worth my time to reply to you I will later

Knock it off, you were being condescending to scientists.

                          • One of the ways folks try to minimize the impact of global warming is to say "So what? The earth's temperature has always fluctuated." XKCD author produces a comic that puts that notion in perspective.

That's really good (including the clever and funny bits) and instructive. Two things come to my mind whenever this issue comes up. First, I'm interested in how they know with such precision what the average temperatures were at any time tens of thousands of years ago (but not so interested that I want to read a lot--I'd love an abstract).

And second, I think one of the problems people have in accepting the seriousness of global warming is that a shift of "only" a few degrees doesn't sound all that problematic--in the course of a day my office (and cowboy's!) temperature swings a few degrees, so what? The swing is even greater, of course, outside, esp. over a full year.

I absolutely accept it's a big problem when the shift is on a global scale; I'm just saying I understand why to the uninformed an increase of a few degrees may not seem like a big deal.
