It's interesting that we all (I include myself) assume that a 16-year old boy doing his 35-year old female teacher is going to be just fine, but the 16-year old girl in this case is going to be traumatized for life. That assumption probably has very little basis in reality and is based mostly on our sexist stereotypes. Most kids start having sex around 16 or even younger and turn out fine.

I think someone who commits forcible rape of any kind should go away for a LONG time -- sometimes forever. For a consensual relationship like this, I think a year sounds about right -- because he had a position of authority as a teacher and took advantage of it. But it seems misleading to call this crime rape or forcible sodomy just because the girl is 16.

If he weren't in a position of authority, it would seem more logical to just call the crime "sex with a minor" and make the guy do community service and probation, maybe.

The kid that shagged this teacher probably experienced the exact opposite of trauma and it probably turned him into the hero of his high school and he probably parlayed it into an immeasurable amount of tail.
