I would be concerned that BYU would turn into Bob Jones University 2.0. If anything, the mellowing influence on BYU comes from SLC. It' snot like there is a bunch of prog-mos in Provo just waiting to shed the shackles of the Church so BYU can be more worldly or liberal. I think it's just as likely it would go the other way.

They're also checking on their money stream. That's pretty compelling incentive to get the math right.Originally posted by Portland Ute View PostSo, a professor at...Brigham Young University...issues a report stating that kids that go attend...Brigham Young University...
benefit from attending Brigham Young University.
Is anyone surprised that BYU issues a report which paints BYU in a positive light?
I wouldn't consider this study/report definitive because it is highly biased.τὸν ἥλιον ἀνατέλλοντα πλείονες ἢ δυόμενον προσκυνοῦσιν

Must be some kind of accounting shell game. I think the total subsidy for BYU is around $200M. Wouldn't make sense for more than half of that to come from Canada.Originally posted by Uncle Ted View PostIt seems that BYU takes a good chuck of tithing funds to run. Out of the $115mm that the LDS church in Canada spent on "qualified donees" (ward budgets and such) about $103mm (nearly 90%) of it went to BYU.
The total revenue for the LDS church of Canada is $161mm."There is no creature more arrogant than a self-righteous libertarian on the web, am I right? Those folks are just intolerable."

God bless our friends to the North for paying more than their share.Originally posted by Jeff Lebowski View PostMust be some kind of accounting shell game. I think the total subsidy for BYU is around $200M. Wouldn't make sense for more than half of that to come from Canada.
Yeah, I am guessing that they are doing some kind of accounting shell game. They don't want to show all the money going to a mall in SLC in a country that requires non-profits to disclose their financials.

Wow, I need to do a better job of proof reading my posts.
Let me clarify what I mentioned in the initial post about BYU and Canadian tithing funds:
From what I've heard, the Canadian government is very restrictive on tithing money going out of the country. Alberta is also the only place outside the western United States that has more money coming in from tithing than it is spending. I assume the US doesn't have these restrictions and the western States money is financing the rest of the world, whereas the Canadian money cannot.
Of course BYU is one of those allowable instances, so a large chuck goes there. I've heard that it is easier for Canadians to get into BYU because of this. I don't know if the amount of money they can transfer is per pupil, but they at least want to keep a certain number of students in there to continue to be recognized by the Canadian government. So yeah, you can call it an accounting shell game.
The other means of moving money out that I've heard of is, if the Canadian government has allocated funds for foreign aid in another country the church can too. I've heard there have been instances where the church has put more money into foreign relief than the Canadian government did.
I heard all of this from my dad who is by no means an authoritative source, so take it with a grain of salt.
