There's very little that can be said to make me feel comfortable about being only 600 miles from Korea right now.

The situation there is uncomfortable enough for me here in Utah. I can't imagine what it's like for you and MBN.

Not long ago an obituary appeared in the Salt Lake Tribune that said the recently departed had "died doing what he enjoyed most—watching BYU lose."

I have to wonder if the American troops in South Korea actually really protect North Korea more. South Korea's GDP is like 30 times more than North Korea's. Given that economic advantage North Korea would be crazy to mess with South Korea even if the US military didn't have a presence there. Of course, their leader is crazy.

The problem is, the crazy NKs have over 10,000 pieces of heavy artillery aimed at Seoul, and could do incredible damage with a conventional 'first strike' before anyone could do anything in retaliation. Kim claims to be able to level the SK capital in a few hours. That claim may not be that over the top...

Yes, their leader is an absolute nutjob, and he's an evil little bastard who has kept his people repressed and impoverished so he can retain power. He spends so much on his military, that he literally cannot feed his people. But he's a nutjob who wields amazing power over his enemy's capital. It'd take a coordinated series of tactical nukes to take out his conventional hold on Seoul. Good luck with that...

Why do you think the Chinese aren't putting their foot down on this guy. Surely a flare up wouldn't be in their best interest.

Maybe China will see this as an opportunity to invade Taiwan.

If they did, I would tell them our debt to them is null and void.

Unfortunately, china holds enough of our currency that were we to piss them off financially, they could dump it and make the dollar worth next to nothing.

High stakes poker. I don't think the Chinese people would be too happy having the taste of middle class benefits and their leaders throwing it all away to invade Taiwan.

The problem with ideologues though is you never know what extent they would go to for the end results.

Assuming that would be the outcome, aside from all hell breaking lose worldwide, the price of Chinese goods would skyrocket, kicking the Chinese right back in the nuts.

In a weird kind of way we have the Chinese over a barrell; they loan us the money that we then use to buy their stuff which fuels their economy. They pull the plug and they take a hit.

Hmm... China is buying up gold and oil. Maybe they are planning to dump it anyway.
