    Which is best:

Requiring English speakers to learn Spanish in the United States, after Spanish speakers make up the majority of the population.

Requiring Spanish speakers to learn English, even though English speakers are in the minority.

It is a free country, so no one is required to learn any one language. Government documents are translated into as many languages as is practical, balancing utility and cost.

How do you feel about those who will eventually require my grandkids to speak spanish as the main language, doing it by illegal means. I guess you are OK with that.

So if robbers break into your house and occupy it for 14 days, I guess they should get to decide what goes on in your house. Your thinking gives away the ranch without thinking of consequences. So many of your ideas are just throwing shit against a wall and never considering who has to clean up.

If it isn't obvious, I think the third choice is the right one. It is a free country, and everyone should speak whatever language they like, including Klingon, if that floats your boat. There should be no single official language, and public documents should exist in as many languages as is practical, balancing utility and cost. This is my POV, and I don't think it is effed or insane.

Your POV seems to be majority rules. You are happy to require English for everyone, right now, because English is the dominant language. It should then follow that if Spanish were to become the dominant language, then Spanish should become the official language. To me, that seems effed up.

        • Robin, when do your demographic projections have the majority of US citizens speaking Spanish as their first language? I want to know when to start looking for sales on Rosetta.

Geez Robin, you just don't get it do you. Yes I believe the majority rules. You have just pointed out to me that if we let millions and millions of illegal aliens in and give them citizenship, eventually they will be the majority and vote against things I believe in. So you are convincing me to flip to the side of no citizenship for the illegals. Nice, I was on the give them citizenship side.

It is a theoretical possibility that already exists in some pockets of the country. Since conservatives tend to want to support local government over federal government, I think it should be the conservative position that within these pockets, official documents and public education should be in Spanish... assuming folks want to be consistent.

The only way people will speak more Spanish than English is if there is an overthrow of the government which was founded on documents written in English and has conducted all of its business in English ever since. Maybe not even then. In this country it is the language of power and that will not change. People who refuse to learn it will never gain enough power to make any difference on this issue.

I can't think of an example of what Robin is describing ever having happened, except violently.

Well, he is indicating the time will move up if we give illegals citizenship and continue to allow illegals in and give them citizenship.

My question would be how long before the majority would vote Mexico be allowed to annex us?

If I were to believe like Robin, they are coming here to be Americans so they can eventually get Americans to be Mexicans.

Anything I've said has nothing to do with legal status. Natural born citizens in Spanish speaking households may one day be the majority. This isn't about immigration. It is about the idea of a single official language.

                    • And of course, since English is the global language of business, etc., if the US adopted Spanish as its new language, that would be another step backwards for the US on the global stage.

All over California, dual-language programs are developing around Mandarin. The grip of the English speaking world is slipping.

LOL. I have a DIL who is an immigrant and a SonIL whose ancestors were immigrants. Both speak English, she broken English. To think they, let alone their kids and grandkids are going to want to speak Spanish instead of English is truly laughable.

Unless you get a massive influx all at once, immigrants will be Americanized.

You are doing a SU on me aren't you? I know you aren't as dumb as you are sounding.

There are language pockets all over the US. If a person lives in one of these language pockets where English isn't the dominant language, the person could live an entire life without needing to speak fluent English. I like to visit these pockets for the authentic world cuisine that is served there. To me it seems that the hosts of these authentic restaurants have learned exactly enough English to make me comfortable enough to give over my money for their services. It usually isn't fluent English, yet because the businesses primarily serve the minority language population, they are financially successful, in spite of the lack of English.

This is what I like, and this is the American way. We shouldn't require English, just to make the BYU71's of the world feel a bit more comfortable. In a free country, people should be able to speak, or not speak, in whatever way they like. Since the purpose of government is to serve the citizens, where there are significant population bubbles of non-English-speaking citizens, the government should provide them services in their primary language. It is, after all, their government too.

You have trolled me long enough today. I am done. I have gotten to the point I am truly starting to think you are a dumb ass and I know your not. That is when I know I have gotten to the point you have successfully trolled me. Nice work.

The Al Gore's should be opposed to open immigration as well... According to this study it would significantly increase green house emissions:

The findings of this study indicate that future levels of immigration will have a significant impact on efforts to reduce global CO2 emissions. Immigration to the United States significantly increases world-wide CO2 emissions because it transfers population from lower-polluting parts of the world to the United States, which is a higher-polluting country. On average immigrants increase their emissions four-fold by coming to America.
