  • I believe that Sneddon was shanghaied to NK. They have a history of kidnapping teachers for their spy foreign languages program. If he had died, they would have found his bones by now.

The evidence is circumstantial but there is enough evidence to have a Utah Senator and a Utah Representative introduce bills in both houses of Congress to petition the US State department to investigate further. One also has to consider the different and sometimes contending interests in play with the USG. Was it in the USG's interest to pursue the kidnapping of Charles Horman in Chile in 1973?

All possible alternatives to explain David Sneddon's disappearance have been evaluated and his being kidnapped by North Korea holds the greatest probability.
      1) Did he die in a hiking accident? Deaths have occurred on that trail but the bodies have always been recovered. In my view, the odds of an experienced hiker in his prime (he was a cross country runner in high school) somehow dying are very low and dying without recovery of the body are almost nonexistent - it would be a first. Besides, the Sneddon family have found evidence that David made it though the gorge. Rather than pursue that evidence, China worked to remove it.
      2) Did David Sneddon get lost and perish in the wilderness? Doubtful. The trails are well worn and marked. Experienced hikers usually don't go off trail; especially in a foreign land. If David did somehow get lost, he had the skills to survive until he could be rescued. This isn't a 12-year lost boy in the mountains, it's a 23-year old Eagle Scout with backpacking experience and survival skills.
      3) Was David Sneddon murdered? Violent crime is very low in that region of China; it is hospitable to tourists, especially Westerners. Also a violent murder tends to leave evidence and possible witnesses. National and local police have investigated a murder scenario as well as members of the Sneddon family who have traveled to the region multiple times and all have dismissed it.
      4) Did he meet a local woman, fall in love, and they ran away together? That possibility was floated early. Until it was learned that David Sneddon is active LDS, a RM, and was planning on returning to BYU for his senior year. The Sneddon family, like many Mormon families, is a close one. There is no way he cuts off contact with his parents - he was emailing his mother several times a week during his Summer in China.

In my view, what is more probable is that he was detained by local police and questioned before being turned over to North Korean agents who would have been summoned. NK agents operate in that region of China. There are documented incidences of NK defectors/refuges being caught by NK agents in China with the assistance of local police. However, China officially does not admit its involvement for diplomatic reasons - they can't be seen as allies and collaborators with NK when it comes to human rights issues. It's possible that local police had no involvement with David Sneddon's disappearance and NK agents discovered David with their own network of spies that is in place to catch NK defectors. But if that is the case, why work to remove the evidence that David hiked through the gorge successfully and then trekked on to Shanghai La? The answer: Because Western tourists don't get murdered, elope, or otherwise go missing in that region. And when accidents do occur, bodies are recovered.

Not long ago an obituary appeared in the Salt Lake Tribune that said the recently departed had "died doing what he enjoyed most—watching BYU lose."

                    • North Korea has sentenced an American student to 15 years' hard labour for crimes against the state after he tearfully admitted that he tried to steal a propaganda banner from a hotel.

Otto Warmbier was arrested as he attempted to leave the country in January and later made a televised “confession” saying that he had taken the sign to bring back a “trophy”.

North Korean state news agency KCNA said the 21-year-old’s offence was "pursuant to the US government's hostile policy" and that he was convicted under an article of the criminal code dealing with subversion.

The University of Virginia student who had visited the isolated state as a tourist, had said during his confession that he had tried to steal the banner for an acquaintance who wanted to hang it in her church.

                      • The only Trump supporter I know is at work. When it comes to politics and world events it's like he's from another planet. He listens to and follows some really weird sources on the internet. He's really into conspiracy theories. Some of the things he's told me include:

"how do you know N. Korea is such a bad place? How can you believe what the media says? It might be a really nice place.

"Putin isn't a bad guy. In fact, Russia is really starting to become a Christian nation."

"Having a dictator wouldn't be that bad if he did the things you want"

I wonder if the guy was set up. Here's part of his confession, sounds like something a typical college student would say:

"I committed the crime of taking down a political slogan from the staff holding area of the Yanggakdo International Hotel. The aim of my task was to harm the motivation and work ethic of the Korean people. This was a very foolish aim..."

                              • It's about time North Korea put its foot down.
Part of it is based on academic grounds. Among major conferences, the Pac-10 is the best academically, largely because of Stanford, Cal and UCLA. “Colorado is on a par with Oregon,” he said. “Utah isn’t even in the picture.”
