CNN is showing photos from high ground of Port Au Prince that make it look like its shrouded in dense fog. In fact, the entire city is encased in think dust from collapsed buildings. Think twin towers type dust. This looks very bad.

It is really bad. The fact they have no infrastructure and no one is on their way to help makes it worse. The UN or US or someone is going to have to come in quick here. I heard the Port Au Prince hospital collapsed, so that is not of any help, and all the emergency workers you had now need help. It is only going to get worse.

The whole global community will need to come through. I hope the church takes a large role here as it did in Katrina since we have shown the capacity to make a big difference. Do I remember right that the missionaries got pulled out of there last year as the government destabilized?

Sad. Earthquakes are bad news. It's amazing the destruction they do, particularly in developing countries with poor building standards. 7.0 is huge. How long did it last? I imagine it must have shook for at least 30 seconds. Any damage in the DR?

The quake was only 6 miles below the surface, which resulted in more surface shaking. Plus 13 aftershocks of at least 5.0, and 28 aftershocks total.

Port-au-Prince, which was only 10 miles from the epicenter, has a population of 2.5 million, making this one of the most devastating earthquakes in history in terms of total people affected. By contrast, 1906 San Francisco had a population of 400,000, and 65% were left homeless, and 1 in 120 died.

The Dominican Republic is 40 miles from the epicenter and has only small towns of under 10,000 population within 100 miles of the border. Few injuries are expected to be reported there.

You would have to imagine there would be some. Though that island has always intrigued me. How one side can be so third world and miserable and the fence down the middle has the east half looking like a paradise.

This is really horrific. After the Chengdu quake in China a couple of years ago, a friend and ward member who spends lots of time in that area brought back photos he took the day of and shortly after the quake, and he presented one of the most memorable HP Group lessons about the after-effects. The photos included a picture of a man whose wife had been crushed in the quake. He had carefully wrapped her body, strapped it to his back, and drove a moped some 60 miles so he could bury her in the family plot. Pictures of children trapped in the rubble still haunt me. My heart, and an inadequate donation, go out to the hundreds of thousands of victims.

Haiti's Prime Minister was just interviewed live on CNN and said they estimate "well over 100,000" are dead, and the devastation is so widespread that the government may no longer have order and control. Additionally, everyone is presumed dead inside the collapsed United Nations HQ building.

Nothing like a little fearmongering.
