The people of Maine rejected same-sex marriage

Similar to the situation in California last year, this past May the Maine legislature passed a same-sex marriage Act and the governor signed it into law.

Today the people voted to repeal the new law by 52% to 48%.

Hopefully the Mormons get the blame there also. We wouldn't want those Saints feeling left out.

I wonder if only the Blacks and Mormons voted for it there too.

So no state has actually voted for gay marriage? That's the liberal way. They can't get the votes so they go the legal route.........and then get it overturned. Good strategy in the short term. Not so much in the long term.

Wow, I turned to the Rachel Maddow show last night and she and her guest were sure it was going to win. They had learned a lot from California.

I watched CNN and they were all talking about the climate in America changing and Maine would be the catalyst for the change. One pundit indicated that Maine was really liberal so maybe it wouldn't be the catalyst and reflection on how the rest of the country would feel.

We probably need to have some more Europeans immigrate to America before we can really get the change the country needs so badly.

Over the long term the pro gay marriage people have nothing to worry about. It's the younger generation who tends to think that being gay is no big deal and that gay people should have the same opportunity for marriage that straight people have.

I hate to break this to you guys and gals, but young people get older. Then they get even older. You can't count on them believing the same thing at 40 that they did when they were hanging out in college. Eventually they hit the real world.

However, maybe if Pelosi and Obama get their way, the real world will never come for the younger generation.

My grandparents were pretty racists when they were old. I haven't noticed my parents getting anymore racists as they've gotten older.

Somethings are permanent in a generation. I don't know what would move the younger generation to be more homophobic. There could possibly be something.

I guess if you define thinking marriage should be only between a man and a woman as being homophobic, then you will probably be right. One thing young people hate and sometimes grow out of is being called names.

I was thinking more along the lines of as they get older and get married and have families they might start thinking that one man one woman is what marriage is. However, maybe not.

By the way, the racism, homophobic analogy has never worked with me and never will, but I am not young.

How do young people feel about polygamy. Perhaps there can be a trade off. The church backs off of the gay marriage thing in return for the government issuing an apology for their treatment of polygamists.

Why does the analogy not work?

Referendum 71 passed in Washington, which grants state registered domestic partners all rights, responsibilities, and obligations granted by or imposed by state law on married couples.

Nine years ago, the first same-sex marriage proposition lost 61-39. Now the votes are down to the 53-47 range. Exit polls show that those currently in their 50's voted similarly to how the 40's demographic voted ten years ago, and today's 40's are consistent with the former 30's, and so on.

I don't know any people who used to be for equal rights but over time changed their minds. I only know the vice versa, or people who have always been opposed to it.

I live on the Idaho side of the state line. I was half expecting to be asked to help with the no vote on 71. Not a peep. Maybe it is because I live in Idaho or maybe it is because the Church made their point in California and now have learned their lesson. I have 350 employees here and I think I'm the only member, so I can't ask others here at work if their experience was similar.

I would have voted for that. Maybe they named it after me.

Because me not feeling like gays should be considered married is not homophobic as I define homophobic.

If I thought a gay was stupider than I, less entitled to get health care, less entitled to get a job, less entitled to sit next to me, not allowed to join my country club, not allowed to vote, not allowed to run for office, not allowed to teach in school, if I thought any of those things, I would consider myself a homophobe.

However, that is just me. Maybe those of you are right who think eventually gay marriage will come to pass and to tell you the truth, I don't think I am going to care much.

I wasn't trying to call anyone names. I couldn't think of a better word. I was reluctant to use it, but couldn't think of a better term.
