  • I thought this was a fascinating article

    http://universe.byu.edu/node/3158

I knew about the protest, and I think I remembered that Wyoming players had been dismissed, but I didn't know about the way the dismissal had come about. I also didn't know that one of the players who had wanted to join the protest was LDS.

But by far, the quote that stood out to me was by a current student who was asked for her thoughts on the incident:

“This story was a definitely a surprise to me,” said Katie Haskin, a junior from Minnesota. “I had never heard about this racist attack or any attack on BYU, however Mormons were and are a big target still today to society so our beliefs being attacked is not a surprise.”

If we disagree on something, it's because you're wrong.

It is politically correct to attack Mormon beliefs today.

    Is she wrong?

What does it have to do with political correctness? Everybody gets attacked when they do something unpopular. Where does political correctness enter into it?

that was a wild quote. very annoying.

              I laughed at this, though:

I'm not talking about Prop 8, specifically. I just mean you can attack Mormon beliefs whenever you feel like it and it's fine. But you can't attack Jewish beliefs or Muslim beliefs or Rainbow Coalition beliefs without being nationally branded a bigot.

Looks like the LDS Persecution Complex is alive and well in the younger generation based on a few of those quotes. Like "Popcorn Popping" and Jello Salad, it's one of those Mormon peculiarities that will probably be around forever.

                        Nice find, SoCal.

Here's a discussion of some context, mentions the wyoming kids on page 3 of the pdf (pg. 306 of the journal) : http://www.la84foundation.org/Sports...3/jsh1503f.pdf

Clifford Bullock is the real expert: http://uwacadweb.uwyo.edu/RobertsHis...conscience.htm. He did an MA on the incident.

Look, SoCal, if your point is "any attacks Mormons experience pale in comparison to what blacks went through," then I agree 100%.

That doesn't mean there isn't a real element of disrespect and attacks on LDS beliefs today.

Not to speak for SoCal, but perhaps his point was that it's pretty ignorant for the BYU students in the article to make any negative comments about the Wyoming students who were protesting BYU. It's ignorant to imply that protesting institutional racism by BYU was somehow an unfair attack on Mormons and BYU.

The Wyoming students who were protesting were on the correct side of history. Mormons were on the racist, ignorant side of history by banning blacks from the Priesthood and not scouting black athletes (according to the article).

That's the way I see it, at least.
