I'd go for it along with a fast food and snack tax. I would also want a tax credit for joining a gym.Originally posted by RC Vikings View PostHow do you feel about a soda tax to help fund the medical plan?"Be a philosopher. I am all for these things...fast food, alcohol, cigarettes, soda, and junk food. Tax it all. They all contribute to the escalating costs of health care.Originally posted by Mormon Red Death View PostI'd go for it along with a fast food and snack tax. A tax credit for joining a gym would be nice, but probably so small as to be insignificant. How much does it cost to join a gym? In some cases, free.Fitter. Happier. More Productive.

lol. yes, they are to discourage people from drinking and smoking. Just like sales tax is designed to discourage people from going out and buying things.Originally posted by JohnnyLingo View PostI've never really thought what these taxes are for, exactly.
Do they exist to discourage drinking and smoking? If that is the case, I'm going to say they don't work that well.
bonus that you are reading this but can't respond!Fitter. Happier. More Productive.

The statistics do not support you, last I checked. Also there's more to it than discouragement - externalities do exist in many cases and in this sphere specifically. Very large externalities at that.Originally posted by JohnnyLingo View PostI've never really thought what these taxes are for, exactly.

I may quibble with the earmarking (or lack thereof) of the tax revenues but not the concept.Awesomeness now has a name. Let me introduce myself.

Sure there is... Fast food is linked to obesity and obesity is well documented as a problem for society. Like I said I would tax fast food and snacks and treats.Originally posted by TheBYUGuy View PostWhy a fast food tax? Is there some kind of cost to society for me getting a club sandwich for lunch?
