That's interesting. I wonder if it will affect his overall artistic legacy. After all, this isn't some minor B-movie hack. This is a guy who has won an Oscar for Best Director (THE PIANIST) and is credited with directing what is regularly referred to as one of the greatest films of all time (CHINATOWN.) Great films regularly outlive poor box-office reception and minor controversy. I have little doubt that Polanski's films will overshadow this incident in the historical record. What do people think about that? I mean, I'm sure there have gotta be people out there who will suggest boycotting Polanski films forever.Originally posted by dabrockster View PostFor me. I have never seen any of his movies, but it wasn't because of who he was. Just wasn't my type of movie. But later when I found out he had made those movies my desire to see them went even farther down the list.. So I guess you can say it in the end had a negative impact on me..Kids in general these days seem more socially retarded...
None of them date. They hang out. They text. They sit in the same car or room and don't say a word...they text. Then, they go home and whack off to internet porn.
I think that's the sad truth about why these kids are retards.

I will not boycott his films, but I must admit that the first time I ever watched a Polanski film (Macbeth), I was also informed of his past. I wonder if he'll ever escape that.Originally posted by Green Lantern View PostThat's interesting. I wonder if it will affect his overall artistic legacy. I don't think so. He intentionally drugged a 13 year old girl and took advantage of her to satisfy his sexual urges."Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance and the gospel of envy; its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery." - Winston Churchill

I thought you were referencing what the law called them. The public is filled with people who don't know their ass from Bakersfield.Originally posted by dabrockster View PostOK. That might be true. But the public opinion usually lumps them all into one as the same..
I think that a person with a history of unlawful sex with minors is called a repeat offender. I think there is a technical term for someone who is attacted to a young person who is just barely hitting puberty. None of those distinctions are particularly important...at least not according to Utah statute. A pedophile is a person with the psychological disorder of pedophilia which is having sexual love for pre-pubescent children. I'm not sure how a repeat offender or a person attracted to those who have already hit puberty come into it. Maybe you can explain.Originally posted by dabrockster View PostWhat if the person has a history of having sex with minors. What are they called then? They may have hit puberty but are still a minor. Are they just a rapist? They are not attracted to a child who is "Pre-Puberty" but are attracted to a child who is just hitting puberty. Are they not a pedhophile?

Yeah, I certainly don't think that HE should escape his past. I just hope the films do. By the way, it's sounding like no one commenting here has seen CHINATOWN! I envy people who have yet to see it for the first time.Originally posted by il Padrino Ute View PostShould he escape his past?

I really liked Chinatown and will probably watch it again. I just happen to want to see the director rot in prison.Originally posted by Green Lantern View PostYeah, I certainly don't think that HE should escape his past. I just hope the films do. I think he should be given whatever he's got coming to him. However, I'd like to get to the point where I can watch one of his shows and not hear a comment about his crimes.Originally posted by Green Lantern View PostYeah, I certainly don't think that HE should escape his past. GL, I am one of those people who have never seen Chinatown. My friend rented it recently and made a big deal of the fact I had never seen it. To be honest, I have seen very few films made prior to the mid-1980s. How can I make room for all the quality classics out there when I'm constantly been bombarded with the new-classics, like Crank 2: High Voltage?Ain't it like most people, I'm no different. No disagreement at all. Of course, I usually have no idea who directs a movie. I see movies because of who is in the movie. If Chinatown had been directed by Kurt Hale, I would watch it because Nicholson is in it.Originally posted by Green Lantern View PostThen it sounds like you and I don't have a lot of disagreement."Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance and the gospel of envy; its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery." - Winston Churchill

Let us first agree that one should never miss an opportunity to view Jason Statham in all his car-battery-chargin', sex-on-the-horse-track-havin' glory and then let me suggest that you do put CHINATOWN in your queue. Great screenplay, great direction and great acting by a young Jack Nicholson. I think some people do great films a disservice by proselytizing their greatness and making others feel like watching the film is some kind of homework they need to do. CHINATOWN is pure pleasure (and yet, slightly more nourishing than CRANK 2.Originally posted by falafel View PostIl Pad, GL's response is what I was referring to. On the Roman Polanski story. I don't know what California's laws are currently but what Mr. Polansky did to that little girl is not the "statutory rape" hinted at by the cinema community. I'd always believed Polansky's crime was a confusion regarding a young girl who looked older. Now I find that is not the case. Let me explain...
Statutory rape can be consensual in fact but is not consensual in law. The underage person can be happy about the intercourse and the act is still illegal because of the legal history regarding parental consent for acts by minors. Just as a kid can't enter into a binding contract (and in some ways related to the reason) a kid can't enter into a sexually active relationship with an adult.
On the other hand, taking the grand jury testimony as true, Mr. Polansky raped this youngster in fact as well as according to the law. He had forcible sexual contact that was actually forcible. He used a drug to ply his victim and, over her protests, raped her. Further, he forcibly sodomized her using the same technique of abuse.
I will never purchase or view a movie produced/directed/written etc. by this man. It is appalling that he won an Academy Award while hiding from justice. It speaks volumes re: the Academy. I know that the victim wants to get on with her life but she is blaming the wrong party (lawyers, judges, etc.) all of this is derived by the violent act and subsequent flight from justice by Mr. Polansky (or as I will now call him the "ass rapist").

That is all the endorsement I need. Of course, it will have to wait for now, as I've got Max Pain to watch first.Originally posted by Green Lantern View PostLet us first agree that one should never miss an opportunity to view Jason Statham in all his car-battery-chargin', sex-on-the-horse-track-havin' glory and then let me suggest that you do put CHINATOWN in your queue. You make a good point. I'm kind of a director-whore, so it's one of those things I always pay attention to when I watch a movie, but naturally a lot of people are watching and enjoying THE PIANIST without any idea who Polanski is.Kids in general these days seem more socially retarded...
