My wife gets People magazine whenever we go on a trip and I usually steal it and find it pretty interesting.

What?? How can you be bored with the personal lives of celebrities? They are like scientific experiments that we are all collectively performing on human beings. Celebrity is a grotesque science experiment, like something involving monkey brains and electrodes and shit. It's like this: What would happen if we, like, took a bunch of beautiful young people, and, like pumped up their ego 'til their eyes began to bulge, but made them hyper-self critical and totally lacking in self-esteem, and gave them so much money that they would never have the benefit of real work to distract them from the extremes of their own eccentricities, then, like, what do you think would happen? I was waiting to see how long it would be until someone brought him up. While we are at it we could talk about Norman Mailer and Jack Abbot.

Seriously, this has been an interesting discussion. I guess I come down on the side of He fled the jurisdiction and should be put in Jail. There should be not statute of limitations if you flee to avoid punishment.

People's lack of thought and attention amazes me. This is the same Roman Palonski who made Chinatown, sometime after he did this to the girl. It's just today's story is all.

People act like the justice system perfectly metes out justice everywhere and this is its one hideous imperfection that needs to be righted. There are so many other terrible things going on to go nuts about (incuding in the criminal justice system). This injustice is peanuts.

Listening to to Susan Estrich on NPR last night I realized my social critique missed a third element with an iron in this fire.

Cool, it reminds me of a law and order episode I saw. Entertainer had molested a young man many years prior. Went after molester although kid and parents wanted it to just be dropped, a settlement was done out of court. McCoy wouldn't drop it and then found out the parents had arranged the encounter in the first place. McCoy then went after them.

Sometimes prosecutors do get carried away. The boy got a college education he wouldn't have. The parents got money to take care of, I think another child who had problems and of course the entertainer got to have sex with a young boy.

What the hell business was this of McCoy's anyway. They were all happy.

Let's say he shouldn't be punished for raping a 13 year old. What about his being a fugitive for the last 32 years? Should he be punished for that?

I am with you on this one. It would seem that time and efforts would be better spent focusing on Innocence Projects (I know of at least one CUF better half that spends some of her time in this noble and important effort.....when she isn't busy trucking around the office distracting everyone...rowrrr!).

The Polanski case is terribly un-compelling when the girl in question has asked everyone to get over it and move on. This is Primal Scream therapy coupled with laryngitis. Interesting in theory but ultimately very ineffective.

who cares? I don't. Neither does Samantha Geimer. What difference does it make if Roman Polanski lives the rest of his life in Switzerland or France? His punishment is never being able to come back to the US. He can never visit the grave of his murdered wife. He will always be branded a fugitive.

Talk about a huge w.a.s.t..e of tax dollars. Let's spend months and months getting roman polanski back in the US so we can put him in prison briefly. yawn.
