The risks of Sun exposure vs. the risk of lack of sun exposure.

“Orthopedic surgeons don’t go around telling people not to exercise because it will lead to all these knee surgeries when they’re 70,” Weller says. “They recognize that the benefits of exercise are hugely greater than the risks, but dermatologists don’t seem to be able to do this equation [when it comes to sunlight].

So what's the upside that is supposed to counter-balance skin cancer?

      From the article:

The study found that the risk of death from all causes approximately doubled among women who tended to avoid the sun compared to women who got the greatest amount of UV exposure — including from both the sun and from tanning beds. The relationship was dose-dependent, the study found, meaning that the more sun a woman reported getting, the lower her risk of death. The protective effect of sun exposure remained significant, even after the study authors adjusted their figures for income, BMI, smoking history, and other factors that could account for their findings.

Hmm. I guess Superman was right about the Sun.

Side note: I live in Phoenix where it's extremely sunny just about every f*88#*% day of the year. The only days I wake up in a good mood because of the weather are the rare overcast or rainy days.

Could it also be that people who are very active outdoors by swimming, hiking, biking, running, etc., both get a lot of sun exposure and a lot of exercise and then tend to eat and sleep well as a result?

edit: Addressed in the article. It is possible but some studies have controlled for exercise.

One thing worth pointing out...There is a good chance the causation goes both ways. i.e. Being an active person leads to more time outside and conversely spending time outside leads to being more active.

The activity level is absolutely something that should be considered when considering how much sun exposure you should get. Like the article states, the benefits of sun exposure still need to be established, but the benefits of physical activity are well proven.

I posted a link to a similar article a few months back. That article basically said that the risks of going without vitamin D from the sun are greater than the risks from sun exposure.

I think that's the general obvious takeaway here.

Yep a lot of the Vitamin D research related to heart disease has been done in Utah.

Turns out if you have low Vitamin D levels you have significantly increased risk of heart disease.

However it has been impossible to prove that Vitamin D supplements reduce this risk.

The logical conclusion is that there is a correlation between staying indoors, low Vitamin D, and heart disease but that it’s not the low Vitamin D that causes heart disease.

Makes sense to me that the people who are out hiking and golfing are less likely to have a heart attack.

Those skin damage images kind of feel like those vacuum salesman who show you all the dirt that your regular vacuum isn't picking up. They don't really tell you all that much and are meant to scare you.

The 1 in 55 chance of melanoma is more convincing. It will be interesting to see where the research leads and how that compares to the negative effects of not enough sun.

I read another article advocating an "avoid the sun at all costs" line.

The curious ways your skin shapes your health - BBC Future

Some interesting references to studies, but doesn't even address issues like adequate Vitamin D.

The biggest takeaway I get from the article is to avoid sun burns, moisturize, and drink lots of water.
