And I echo the sentiments of needing the next challenge to begin soon. I got up this morning and then just rolled over and decided to take a day off. A rarity during the challenge.
I agree with this--a long road ride is less taxing than a long run. However, a long mountain bike ride on dirt is equally taxing to a long run. On an easy trail, I can average 12-15 mph; on a technical one, it's more like 5-10 mph. It seems like a 2:1 average for off-road is more appropriate.

I'm not a fast enough road cyclist to comment on 4:1. It seems a little high, but i probably just need to get faster.

just out of curiousity for all you folks who think a road ride is so much easier, how fast are you riding and how much climbing do you do?

If you're talking to me--I'm not saying it's "easier", just less of an impact on your body. I'm a complete novice cyclist and even when I do a lot of climbing, I don't have the same kind of bordering-on-injury feeling that I do when I finish a long run.

I alternated between running/cycling every other day. There was definitely more bang for the buck when I was running, in terms of miles/hour.

For our next challenge, runners/cyclists will be mixed on both teams. So why the fuss?

Bingo! It can be as hard as you want it to be...climbing is a kill and keeping a top speed will get you gassed fast.

Frankly, with the fall and winter coming on for most of us, and given that this is for charity, I definitely think we should give the cyclists a bit of a break. Especially since they will be on both teams.

Not to mention we don't want to hurt their feelings.

Whew! I was scared we'd permanently offended you and that you'd refuse to even participate in any threads where runners were present!

Naw, I bask in your fabulous fitness and wish that someday I too can know the joy of riding a bike without substantial effort. Maybe it will be more even after you have had your knee replacements?

An honest question here. What do you consider a typical average speed for a 20 mile ride with an elevation change of 750 ft on a Mtn bike. I ask simply to gauge my current progress.

I'm not sure I would say "so much" easier. But I would say that personally I recover more quickly from a ride than a run.

If the choice is running 4 miles or riding 16 miles - I run the 4 miles more quickly but recover from the 16 miles more quickly.

For longer runs or rides I admit that it is just my perception, since I haven't done both. But it seems like it is not unusual to hear of some folks taking a 75-100 mile ride with some regularity. Perhaps not every weekend, but more than monthly and for some more than that. On the other hand, you just don't hear about people doing a 20-25 mile run with the the same regularity.

Admitedly, one can chose to run or ride at their own pace - which makes a big difference.

When people talk of running a marathon versus riding a century, the recovery time they describe is somewhat different. Runners seem to take the next week off. Most riders who ride regularly don't seem to.

I don't worry about it being a "fairness" issue. Like I said initially - running you get more bang in with less time. But my opinion is that while it takes more time riders are capable of riding for a much longer period of time than runners can run. But this also means it takes more time to rack up the miles.

They are difficult to compare to be sure. And I don't want to come across as suggesting that riders have it easy. I have been more than happy with the ratios. I think the contest is fine. I think those who dedicate more time to riding should get the payoff - which comes by way of extra miles.

On the other hand...I don't recall too many runners talking about adding up miles while going 40mph downhill around lake Tahoe...

I'm fairly inexperienced when it comes to trolling - was that last line good? I thought it was pretty good...

I'm going to keep posting my miles here because it makes me feel better.

8 miles, 9:03 pace, 165 HR. A little slower than my target race pace of 8:50, but I felt pretty good about it. I'm going to try to run most of my runs at pace while I taper for Logan.
