Yep - I'm registered.Originally posted by bluegoose View PostI think Eddie is. I tried but they were full when i checked.
It went FAST this year.
Last year I didn't register until the first week of January. And there were opennings beyond that. This year I think they were done within a month or so of openning the thing up. Crazy how quick it went.
I was contemplating trying another, but heard some less than favorable reports from folks about their experiences at some and it convinced me that a return to Ogden might be OK. The scenery is OK I guess - but most of all they just have great support for the runners.
In another year or two I'll try St. George, but I've got the first weekend in October committed for the time being.

Speaking at conference again, eh?Originally posted by Eddie View PostIn another year or two I'll try St. George, but I've got the first weekend in October committed for the time being.
I think it filled up in less than a month. I thought I was on top of it, logging into their site just a couple of weeks after they opened it up, and it was already full.
You say the scenery was just "okay"? Reading that RW article made it sound like you were running through the Garden of Eden. Thats disappointing.

Keep in mind that it was my first marathon and due to a calf injury I had run a total of about 16 miles COMBINED in the previous 8 weeks - never more than 3 miles at a time. My longest run of my life - 15 miles - was when the injury occurd.Originally posted by bluegoose View PostYou say the scenery was just "okay"? I remembered hearing about how great the scenery was, so I looked around at the beginning. Lovely Utah sage brush and scrub oak hills and flats. Nothing I can't see out my front window. Further down the canyon we got into some real trees and following the creek. The valley is lovely - but growing up less than an hour away and spending more than my fair share of weekends at Pineview made that part pretty ho hum.
I was feeling great right up until you cross the damn and head down Ogden canyon. Then I started hurting - not necessarily pain, I was just done. And there are 8-10 miles to go. I think that is probably also the prettiest parts of the run - and all I remember from it is wanting to strangle one of the kids riding his long board down the canyon so that I could ride it.
Another very scenic part of the run is probably when you hit the bottom of the canyon and transition from road to trail - right along the river bank and under a canopy of trees. By then I was the walking dead and didn't see anything but 2-3 feet of black paved trail right in front of my feet.
And the slight changes in elevation on the trail - up and down - are something that I never would've noticed at the beginning of the run but by the end I was certain they were placed there in an attempt to get me flat on my face on the ground.
Don't get me wrong, it isn't ugly by any means. And I anticipate that avoiding injury (knock on wood) I'll enjoy the scenery much more this time around. As I think of marathon tracks in Utah, I'm sure it beats nearly all of them. I just wasn't in any position to enjoy it last year.

It is pretty, but the most beautiful thing I saw was the row of blue port-a-potties at mile 13 just as I was coming down with a case of the shits.Originally posted by bluegoose View PostYou say the scenery was just "okay"? Count me as another looking forward to the details. I start my training schedule for Ogden one week from today.Originally posted by nikuman View PostWow! That effing rocked! Almost perfect race given my sloppy training. PR by almost 5 minutes. Full writeup to come.
Been sick the last couple of weeks, so I haven't run much. Got looking at the schedule I set up back when I registered months ago and realized it is a little more aggressive than I remember. Not necessarily more than I want - but with a cold, hurt foot, and various other excuses over the past 2-3 months I don't have quite the base I thought I would. And I'm planning on 5 days of running each week instead of 3-4 like I've done in the past. I suppose I'll have to ease into it with nice slow paces to get started...

Write up to come tomorrow pm - have to get home to pull my actual splits. I ran a 3:55:20 officially. I have to say I'm a bit mad at myself for mile 25 when my quads cramped. But I had a great race overall.
Disney World looks like the Ministry of Silly Walks today. And the awesome thing is that everybody (me included) is not shy about wearing their medals.Awesomeness now has a name. Let me introduce myself.

That's a great time. I'm taking a little more aggressive training schedule this time around to try and break 4 hrs myself - just a little green with envy right now...Originally posted by nikuman View PostWrite up to come tomorrow pm - have to get home to pull my actual splits. I've learned a number of things that helped me, but the biggest thing is multiple races. They have helped both my experience and my physical condition. I was able to push the wall off until about mile 23. If I could have soldiered through, I would have done about a 3:50.Originally posted by Eddie View PostThat's a great time. Congrats on a great race!
For this race, two things in particular were very helpful. On Wednesday, I ran my last "training" run, and I ran it hard. 5k at about 85-90% of race pace for that distance, but right at race pace for the last half mile. I know that runs counter to Higdon advice but it got me mentally fired up if nothing else.
The other thing is Ensure. Best carb loading stuff ever.
I don't know my actual splits yet but my PR was made in miles 5 through 20, and specifically mile six. I even yelled to my wife that I was going to PR at the halfway point.Awesomeness now has a name. Let me introduce myself.

You got into Disney World free right? That alone has to be worth the pain.Originally posted by nikuman View PostWrite up to come tomorrow pm - have to get home to pull my actual splits. We cannot expect to experience the blessing of faith by standing inactive on the sidelines any more than we can experience the benefits of health by sitting on a sofa watching sporting events on television and giving advice to the athletes. And yet for some, “spectator discipleship” is a preferred if not primary way of worshipping." -Pres. Uchtdorf
