When RW first announced Bassos new marathon training program in preparation for the Richmod marathon, my wife looked at their website to find that they were charging $199 for a personalized program. How did you score one for $30?

It looks like a good program, but how much different is it really than Hal Higdons intermediate or advanced program, if you use the one that allows you to click on the daily or weekly training notes? Are you paying for anything more than the daily email reminders? Serious question.

I did my weekly hill interval workout this morning. I've done only uphill intervals for the past 5 or 6 weeks, so I decided to include some downhill intervals, especially considering the profile of the St george marathon.

Higdon recommends following doing a 3:1 or 4:1 ratio of uphill to downhill intervals. So i did 2 sets of 3 uphills to every 1 downhill. The uphills were painful as always (in a good, lung-searing way), but I was surprised at how hard the downhill intervals were.

Going up my HR hit about 175 at the peak of the 1/4 mile hill. Going down my HR maxed out right at 169, and my legs were much more shot than i thought they would be.

I now really fear that mile 20 downhill at StG if it is as steep as cowboy makes it out to be.

Dumb question: How do you go up hill without going back down?

Recover with a slow jog going downhill.

When I was doing the downhill intervals, I would jog or walk around on the flat section at the top of the hill until my HR dropped low enough to start again.

Dumber question: what's a hill? The best I can do is the median of a freeway overpass.

I know the fastest I've ever ran, is when I went from the 4500 ft of Utah to the near sea level of Georgia. I dropped almost 2 min off of my 2 mile time (15:45 to 13:45). By the end of the course I was about back to where I started ( 4 mths later ).

I may be small, but I'm slow.

I did my first of 7 weekly hill workouts today. Holy cow. It's 8 hours later, and I am still wasted from it. I had to walk a bit, I couldn't help it. I'm going to keep doing this same route every Tuesday, it will be interesting to see what improvement happens.

6.03 miles, 55:27 total time, 9:12/mile, 945 ft. elevation gain.

Best run ever today, in terms of feel. I had more left, but not too much more. I am hoping it's not because of that carb gel I had - that thing was a new kind of nasty.

                    Distance: 6.2 miles
                    Time: 48:28
                    Pace: 7:49
                    Avg HR: 152

That's a personal best in the 10k. And I had to stop to cross the street twice, which added about a full minute.

I don't know what it is, but ever since I took off a week to let my foot heal, I've felt fantastic.

I did my first run with the Garmin tonight. It was 88 degrees when I left at 9:15 and 77 degrees when I finished. Too hot.

You know, half the board here would kill to run in those temperatures. How'd you like the Garmin?

The Garmin worked great. I just had a really rough run last night. I'm not sure why, so I'll blame it on the heat. I like running in the morning. It's always cooler and by then last nights dinner isn't sitting in my gut anymore.

I got myself out of bed early enough that I didn't have to fight the heat. It makes a huge difference for me. There were a ton of people running on our parkway today, including a little old man from our ward who is down there with his walker every single morning, rain or shine. Nice to see.

                            4.0 miles, 31:57 total time, 7:59/mile.

Same here. I've been running in the evenings after dinner and that just wasn't working out. So I was up and on the road at 6am this morning and it felt great. I didn't have a full stomach. It was humid, but certainly not as hot as it would be at 7pm. There was less traffic. And my daughter was asleep so I got to run without the jogger.

Unfortunately I couldn't coax Gidget from her slumber so she didn't run with me.

I think my goal now will be to get my cardio in the mornings and lift at night.

I'm just in survival mode this week. I've got kid responsibilities so instead of getting up at 6am to run, I've been getting up and working so I can take time off during the day and trying to run at night. It's not working out all that well so far.
