    Distance: 5.01 miles

    Avg HR: 147

Cowboy, on the HR, it does look like it's elevating ever so gradually throughout the run. The avg HR for my first mile was 132 and for my last was 157 (although that one was my fastest mile).
Damn, you have a low HR. I know I am still not in the greatest shape, but my HR is much higher than yours at a hell of a lot lower speeds. I took it easy on my run this morning, paying more attention to my heart rate than my pace for the first half of the run.

    Code:
Type	Distance	Time Total Time Pace	Avg HR	Max HR

I have no explanation. My wife just thinks I was born to run.

I'm interested to see what happens during my 8 miler this Saturday. I will be running it at a slower pace (8:30ish, probably) and during the heat of the day.

I'd certainly say so. When was it you said you were going to go in and have your max HR determined? If your max HR is anywhere close to what the simple calculators indicate, you've got some serious potential.

Pretty soon. Probably within a month or so.

I am going to feel things out with this first marathon. I am not a prototypical runner in terms of size at all (6'1", 190). But if the predictions that Cowboy's spreadsheet were spitting out at me are even close to right, I might consider entering a few more and get more competitive.

Today my legs were sore. Probably from pushing things hard yesterday. Whatever my HR may be, my legs haven't caught up yet. So a bit shorter today, since I have an 8 miler tomorrow.

            Distance: 4.04 mi
            Time: 31:45
            Pace: 7:51/mi
            Avg HR: 143

I don't have my exact numbers since I was running late this morning and didn't have time to upload the data, but I went 3 miles this morning at around a 10:40 pace. I started out my first mile at a 9:30 pace, but my right hip started feeling a little sore and I had to slow it down. I ended up stopping halfway through and stretching it out some which helped and I ran the last half mile or so at an 8:30 pace. Luckily, tomorrow is my rest day before a 12 miler on Saturday.

Ran 6.1 at a 9:27 pace yesterday and I'm skipping my run today. I might hit the bike tomorrow before my 12 on Saturday. My shin is bothering me a little again, so I'm taking it easy. It doesn't bother at all when I run, but it aches when I sit. I ran 3 at an 8:30 on Monday with a friend who ran Boston a few years ago, and I think that was a little too fast too soon.

I think I may have overtrained this week. The two fast, hard runs on Wed/Thurs, coupled with some serious weightlifting last night, left me with no energy for my 8 miler today. I may have also taken off a bit too fast too. Either way, I cut it about a mile short. Lesson learned.

Felt like crap today. Still feel like crap. I don't know if I'm actually sick, or if it's because of basketball last night. Managed to run a 10k anyway. Maybe that was a mistake.

I'm afraid Top of Utah is out. I screwed up and my shin splints are back. Haven't run for a week, and my shin still hurts. Ill spend three weeks on a bike and then start over. Any reccomendatins for a november marathon that is on a saturday?

That sucks man, I'm sorry. I've taken the last 2 days off to get my hip/upper leg to stop hurting. It's not too bad of a pain, but I figured I'd better stop so i don't end up taking another 2 weeks off. There is a marathon in Mesquite, NV 11/21, here is the link for it.

Has anyone tried The Stick? Our Anniversary is coming up and my wife suprised me by taking me to Salt Lake Running Company and getting me one after I had told her about an article I had read about it. Also, while I was there, the staff member there that help me was named Seth Wold, who told me how he's the top marathon runner in Utah right now. I told him about my hip pain and right away from the location and description, he told me it was ITBS and showed me how to use the stick to help with it. After talking for a while and getting more running advice, we left and came home. I was curious and looked him up to check out his top runner claim. He won both the Utah Valley and Ogden Marathon's and was the top American runner in the SLC marathon. That's one of the reasons I love going to local running stores instead of some of the bigger places, it's nice to be helped by elite runners and get some great running advice.

Sheesh - all this talk of speed training, intervals, and pushing ones self got me thinking that I've just been coasting. So I decided to push myself a little this morning.

                              Crap.

I don't have the fancy gear yet, so it was all just timed with my stop watch on the street.

I ran 3 miles in 23:30. It starts with a decline and ends uphill, with the biggest climb about half way. I pushed it much too hard the first half and was worn out by the time I hit the uphill portions.

After walking about 100 yards to get my HR back to normal, I decided to run it again, just for kicks. The second time I finished the loop in 26:30. I'm convinced that I ran the 3rd mile of the second loop at the same pace as I ran it the first time around.

Apparently I need to do better at pacing myself at the beginning of the run so that I've got something left at the end. Particularly if the end is uphill.
