I've decided I'm finally going to take up running and need good shoes. Any suggestions on brand, type, etc, would be appreciated. I'm such a novice that I don't even know what questions to ask. Do shoes even matter? Is there a noticeable difference between a $20 pair and a $150 pair?

Go to a jogging store and have them fit you. Different shoes for different feet. Getting fit has saved me a lot of pain.Originally posted by smokymountainrain View PostI've decided I'm finally going to take up running and need good shoes. Yes, this is a good answer. I run mostly in Vibrams and Nike Frees. I love both of them and will likely never go back to "typical" running shoes again.Originally posted by Shaka View PostGo to a jogging store and have them fit you. Different shoes for different feet. You can always try going barefoot as well

A good shoe is going to run you 100 bucks, plus or minus twenty. If you find a shoe you like, runningwarehouse.com is a great way to get cheap shoes.
I recommend going in as little shoe as you can. Depends on your stride too. Go to a specialty running store. Not a big box athletic everything.
If anybody says the words "motion control", walk right out and don't come back. All scientific literature I've seen says they do more harm than good, and my podiatrist says they are the spawn of Satan.Last edited by Pheidippides; 05-10-2012, 01:46 PM.Awesomeness now has a name. It shouldn't cost you anything to be fit for a shoe. But if you then buy from the store that fit you, odds are that their price will be more than what you can find online.Originally posted by FN Phat View PostHow much will a fit shoe cost?Ain't it like most people, I'm no different. Go to a running store and the fitting should be free. They'll measure your foot, watch you run, etc.
I usually rock Saucony, and picked up these last month (hey, running shoes aren't about looks!): http://www.saucony.com/commonimages/...1_1200x735.jpg
They usually run me about $100. I love these ones so much I'm going to go back and grab another pair here in the next couple weeks.
Also, grab a pair of good synthetic socks while you're there. So Russell...what do you love about music? To begin with, everything.

Yes. I've bought my last two pair of running shoes from them. The fitting comes with the cost of the shoes. Nikuman is right. Be prepared to spend around $100 give or take a few bills. It's money well spent.Originally posted by smokymountainrain View PostDitto. Also, Shaka, are you familiar with Watch Running Center in Sandy?

Go to a good store for your first shoe.
The two that I know are good areto SL running in slc and runners corner in orem.
Any good store should give you a trial period. At least the Big Ten went after a big-time addition in Nebraska; the Pac-10 wanted a game so badly, it added Utah

Good to hear. I'm not worried about price, just want a good shoe. $100 seems reasonable.Originally posted by Shaka View PostYes. I've bought my last two pair of running shoes from them. I went to Wasatch Running Center and got fitted tonight, tried on about 10 different pairs of shoes and went home with a pair of Sauconys for about $105. There were two other pair that were close but the pair I bought always felt just a tad better overall than the others. We'll see what happens when do that first run/walk tomorrow morning.
As somebody who isn't a runner and has never spent more than about $40 for a pair of gym shoes, it was hard to judge initially because every pair felt so much better than anything I had before.I'm like LeBron James.
