I joined fitday after pelagiu$ brought it up. I have become hooked on it.
My average daily caloric intake is around 2250, but I am burning around 3200 a day.
I realized that my main issue is portion control. I enjoy all kinds of foods, so I don't mind mixing it up. Also, you can still eat a burrito or a steak or whatever. It is all about monitoring it.
I have noticed that I am heavy on carbs, as well, so I am trying to get that evened out.
As of yet, I still don't look like pelagiu$, but I am getting there slowly each day. My biceps still need a lot of work. Next weekend I am going shopping for a black tank top and some tevas.Fitter. Happier. More Productive.

So, inspired by KC and Gidge's threads, I decided to keep track of my calorie intake last week. This is the first time i've ever done that, and I was a bit surprised at how many calories I'm consuming.

One thing is certain: on the days I eat breakfast, my calorie intake is higher than on the days when I skip it, usually by about 750 calories. Is the metabolic boost from eating breakfast sufficient to offset the extra calorie intake? Also, I am very aware that I could cut out a LOT of calories if I would give up soda. As a reasonably fit individual, that's not really something i'm willing to do at this point.
I am presently at 186 lbs, but just today I started my workout regimen with a partner in an attempt to add some lean muscle and drop 7-10 lbs. I turn 30 in late June, and I would like to be able to dunk again on my 30th birthday. I'm close, but I'm about 7-10 lbs away from it, I think.Prepare to put mustard on those words, for you will soon be consuming them, along with this slice of humble pie that comes direct from the oven of shame set at gas mark “egg on your face”! -- Moss

I am just the opposite. I eat fewer calories when I dont eat breakfast because I am not starving for lunch.
I think your caloric intake jumps on breakfast days because you are eating fat bombs for breakfast. Waffles/syrup, McD's breakfast foods, etc.
Try eating a bowl of cereal with sliced fruit or a yogurt with berries, stuff like that. You can even eat a couple of eggs and some oatmeal or something and still be in good shape.
You could probably cut 1,000 calories a day by doing two simple things: cut out soda and cut out fast food.
one thing for sure....writing down your daily food intake (coupled with an actual calorie counter) is pretty eye opening. Although my mind is blown a bit by nik consuming 6500 calories in a day. That is amazing. nik, if you are being accurate, you hide those calories pretty well, I must say.Fitter. Happier. More Productive.

I know! It's radical. I am so glad you joined. Really - that is awesome. You can thank Pelagius for bringing it up. You'll have to let us know what about fitday motivates you and helps you the most . . . DDD - I am addicted too! I have noticed logging on more frequently through out the day to add foods and activities helps me stay caught up AND remember everything (so I am not stuck at 11pm trying to remember yesterday's meals). Also logging on a lot just reminds me what I am trying to do, I love looking through all the bar graphs, pie charts, nutrition break downs, I even started using the journal and find it helpful to look back and read what I wrote. I get check my fitday account like 8 times/day. Facebook 1/day.

Seconded. After years of trying to put on weight, I've been trying to figure out weight maintenance so I don't have the 5+-pound swings as I try to find an equilibrium. The calorie counter has helped me figure out days when it's okay to eat dessert and days when I'd best just drink a glass of milk instead. I really like the nutrition tracker as well.Originally posted by TripletDaddy View PostI joined fitday after pelagiu$ brought it up. I have become hooked on it.
I initially read this as "as of yet, I still don't like pelagius." I was going to say that his suggestion would be redemption enough in my mind, but I see I was in error. As of yet, I still don't look like pelagiu$, but I am getting there slowly each day.

Dislike pelagiu$? Please. That is an impossibility. Only slightly less impossible: looking like pelagiu$.Originally posted by beelzebabette View PostSeconded. Speaking of the nutrition tracker, one thought that has crossed my mind: what the heck are people doing spending coin on vitamin supplements? Throughout the course of the day, we seem to get most of what we need, if not all of what we need, even if we are eating lots of fast food and fruit juice.Fitter. Happier. More Productive.

I am exactly the opposite. If I wake up and eat breakfast at 7:00 a.m., I am starving by 10:00 am. If I skip breakfast, I can wait until noon without eating anything, no problem.Originally posted by TripletDaddy View PostI am just the opposite. On the mornings I ate breakfast last week, it was not because I was hungry, but because I felt compelled to. On Monday, I met a client at McD's near the courthouse, preparatory to a court hearing. On Tuesday, my wife cooked waffles, and I would have felt bad not eating them when she got up early to make them. Most mornings, breakfast would be a bowl of cereal and a piece of fruit. But even that makes it so I'm starving by 10:00.Originally posted by TripletDaddy View PostI think your caloric intake jumps on breakfast days because you are eating fat bombs for breakfast. I realize fast food is not ideal, but sometimes it is all I have when I don't take time to prepare a lunch before coming to work. I need to make a concerted effort to eat more sandwicnes, etc. instead of burgers and pseudo-Chinese. As for soda, i'm not giving it up anytime soon, as it brings me joy. I'd rather make concessions elsewhere.Originally posted by TripletDaddy View PostYou could probably cut 1,000 calories a day by doing two simple things: cut out soda and cut out fast food.Last edited by Donuthole; 04-06-2009, 10:03 AM.Prepare to put mustard on those words, for you will soon be consuming them, along with this slice of humble pie that comes direct from the oven of shame set at gas mark “egg on your face”! -- Moss

Well, it wasn't every day, but on really busy ones I'd end up doing something like this:Originally posted by TripletDaddy View PostI am just the opposite. I eat fewer calories when I dont eat breakfast because I am not starving for lunch.

Breakfast: McGriddles + hash browns + OJ + two breakfast burritos
Lunch: On thursday (catered lunch) I would pork out - if we had fajitas, for example, I'd probably put down four or five Ninfas-style, with chips, queso and giant piece of cheesecake to match. Other days, maybe a Double Angry Whopper, XL fry and DIET coke (har!).
Throw in three or four leaded cokes.
And if we had pizza that night with the kids, I'd down a large on my own. With breadsticks and sauce. But a diet coke this time, so it's cool.
Probably polish of a bag o' Doritos while watching TV.
Late night ice cream with the missus. Then sleep.
I calculated that out and turned out to be something like 6500. I didn't do that every day, but here and there, you better believe I did. Other days were probably in the 4500 range or so. But if you do the math and assume I burn 3000 a day normally (probably a bit of underestimate, depending on the day), those 6500 calorie bombs were a FULL POUND of fat.
I am ashamed of it, but writing it down is cathartic.
Further edit: it was all in my butt, face, and evenly distributed around my stomach. Because my butt and stomach grew together, I still looked roughly proportional.
EDIT: I just did the math. Without the ice cream, about 7000 calories. With, probably like 7500.Last edited by Pheidippides; 04-06-2009, 10:02 AM.Awesomeness now has a name. Let me introduce myself.

Gidg, the neat thing is that I had a bunch of weigh-ins saved on some apps I have on my iPhone. I don't know my exact starting point (it was at least 247, and I have used 250 as what I probably was when I got back from Utah in January) but I was able to enter in all those old weights and generate a graph. That is what really motivated me today. I sprained my ankle on Saturday playing FB and decided I would take today off to rest, but I don't think I will now. I feel good enough to at least go swimming.Originally posted by Gidget View PostI know! It's radical. I am so glad you joined. Really - that is awesome. You can thank Pelagius for bringing it up.
