  • Some of those calorie counts are unreal. I'm 260 lbs. I walked nearly 4 miles on my treadmill last night at a 4 mph pace. I was dying and I only burned 547 calories.

Not intentionally meaning to pick on the cyclists amongst us but if one is going to drop a 2000+ calorie bomb on the other team, one might want to describe what one did in a little more detail than just "cycling".

Something along the lines of "cycled up the face of the Matterhorn" would seem to be appropriate.

I think time and avg speed ought to be sufficient. Case in point: I took my wife's mtn. bike out for a ride the other night. Did 10 miles @ 17mph average. Wore my HR monitor, which is specifically calibrated to my weight. Was gone about 35 minutes. Total calorie burn: just shy of 600 calories. So you have me out cycling at that speed for two hours and you've got somewhere in the range of 2000, assuming a constant HR.

Wait until I drop the marathon bomb on all of you with 3800+.

I'm trying to figure out why someone's weight would make a difference on a stationary bike. I did 45 minutes and burned 553 calories but why would someone that weighs more than me burn more calories? They aren't moving more weight because the bike isn't moving.

        • I'm not into counting calories burned, so this is new for me. I tried using livestrong today which allowed me to put in weight, mph of my run, and total time. The calories it gave me compared to the one linked to on the cuffitnesschallenge site were different by about 150 (higher).

So not understanding why one calorie calculator could be so different than another, do we care much about which calculator people are using?

          • I use the calculator built-in to my treadmill and the one on my Garmin 305. They seem to give numbers on the high side, but who am I to argue?

That is funny...but good point. I went back in to 'edit' what I did in more detail, and you can't edit your info once it has been put in. I went swimming this morning, and put that in...am hoping to run today too...not sure if you can have multiple entries a day once you have initially input the info.

I will be more descriptive from now on. ....what.....dontcha trust me?

You can do multiples a day. I did swimming, spinning and running yesterday and input all three separately.

I would like to be able to edit my entries because I spelled weightlifting wrong.

                    • When you're over 300 pounds everything is burned at a much faster rate. I don't know if I believe the calculators, but I believe them more than I do the machines. Also I'm losing weight at the exact pace the calculators tell me I should be, so maybe they're right. I'm happy to take a photo of my bike screen and load it with my inputs.

I will say that it is embarrassing to put in the numbers for several reasons. I look forward to the day when my workouts results won't raise eyebrows.

My BMR is 2200 calories or so. Add in a sedentary lifestyle and it goes to 2800. I don't completely understand the science, but it stands to reason that if it I burn that many more calories just sitting on the couch, then all calorie burning activities would burn more, regardless of it they are weight bearing or not.

Since a calorie is unit of energy, it makes sense that large people use more energy than smaller people.

It doesn't. The tension/resistance setting is to the stationary bike what the rider's weight is to the moving bike. Assuming an equal peddling speed, a person who weighs 350 pounds and uses a low level of resistance will burn fewer calories than a person who weighs 150 pounds and uses a high level of resistance.

I presume the increased calorie burn from having heavier legs is negligible, but I don't have any evidence to support my presumption.
