C-sections save lives. Research seems to indicate that in American hospitals, c-sections also occur in an alarming number of otherwise healthy and normal pregnancies, or after a long series of unnecessary interventions in otherwise normal and unindicated labor. Circumstances arise necessitating a Caesarean section, and I certainly won't refuse one if it's required. I'm glad the procedure exists and know a number of babies who would have died without it. I will not schedule an elective c-section, however.

In Brazil, approx. 80% of all births are by c-section. They just schedule you.

I think the problem is that women simply don't have any way to know if it's required or not, so when the doctor tells them it is, there's not much they can do.

I think this is probably true. Well, and frankly from a litigation standpoint, it's hard to say the doc didn't do everything he or she could if he or she performed a c-section. That doesn't mean I have to like it.
