During my wife's first visit and mind you I'm paraphrasing here and not including everything they screwed up on but here goes....not only did they forget to get her pre-natal vitamins. Not only did they not tell her the results of her blood test for 2 1/2 weeks...she had to actually go in and ask them when signing a waiver as we'd decided to switch doctors and the response from the nurse was...."Um....no one called you?.....um....yeah everything looks fine....we'll make sure we transfer all this to your new OBGYN."

A couple days later my wife told me during her first visit that she asked at least 3 different times and to 3 different people "What am I supposed to do? What am I supposed to know? This is my first and possibly only pregnancy."

And the answer she got...."Oh....that's all on our website."

    WTF?!

Yeah...she changed Doctors and he's MUCH better.

That they let so many things slip through cracks and treated her like a number at a cattle auction really peeved both of us.

I wrote a letter to the Doctor and made clear why we switched Doctors and detailed everything they let slip through the cracks and the responses my wife received when she was asking simple questions. 2 weeks later I get a call from the Office Manager there apologizely profusely about everything they let slip through the cracks. I told her that's fine but I'd rather hear it from the Doctor and her response?...."Oh well he's too busy that for." I hung up.

I've been with her to the last couple of appointments and the new Doctor is fantastic and treats her great and he answers all of our questions.

Mrs Funk, sorry for not knowing, but does all this midwife chat mean you are delivering your baby at home? Are you doing one of those birth-in-the-bath deals?

No, we're using a group of certified nurse midwives (RNs with a Masters in midwifery) who deliver at the local hospital. They all use backup physicians should something go afoul, which we obviously hope doesn't happen but is always a scary potential. I'd prefer to avoid a c-section if at all possible, but we certainly won't endanger either the child or myself if it comes to that.

I'm not opposed at all to the idea of home birth or water births or using a CPM (certified professional midwife—midwives with a certificate in midwifery, but not the RN training). For our first at least, a hospital delivery with a certified nurse midwife felt best to us. The "just in case" aspect is pretty scary. The care with the midwives has been great—very professional and medically sound.

Apologies. The news may have been buried in this thread amidst words like midwife, preeclampsia, pregnancy, baby, etc.

Thanks! Coming to a hospital near us in early July.

Eh. I suspect she hasn't seen the thread before today. She's a 1L, after all.

pshaw. You think I read all that? I've read fourteen federal cases today, so I think not. I read the first post about the midwife and thought maybe she was at that preliminary stage where you check up with the OBGYN and start taking all those horse-pill vitamins.

Is it the midwife group in Am Fork? My wife went to them for our first, but the baby ended up being breach so she had a c-section anyway.
Ain't it like most people, I'm no different. We love to talk on things we don't know about.

Um, falafel, we do not generally tell stories like this to pregnant women.

Yessir. We are of course aware that things don't always go as planned, but hope for the best.

She WANTS a c-section. I was trying to be supportive.

edit: I misread that. Don't worry, I'm sure everything will be great. I'm assuming you're delivering at Am Fork hospital too? It was a very nice, quiet place to deliver and they took great care of us. I particularly missed the baby nursery when our other two were delivered.

Uhhhh. Did you miss the part where I said I hope to avoid a c-section?

Little Robin was delivered at the hands of one of those NMW's in American Fork, and the whole thing was paid for by the hardworking taxpayers of Utah.

Clearly I'm completely lost in this thread. If you'll excuse me, I think I'll just go back to staring at nikuman's avatar now.
