  • I had a stupid question about races, so I though I'd post it here.

Why are there no "3/4" marathons?

Seems like it would be a natural progression as people work their way to a marathon.

    5K
    10K
    1/2 marathon
    3/4 marathon

I believe it is because the next race is twice as far as the previous.

      5K - 3 mi
      10K - 6mi
      1/2 marathon - 13 mi
      Marathon - 26 mi

There are 20 milers out there, but they are not very common.

The same thing happens for Triathlons.
you start out with a Sprint distance
Olympic doubles the distance in each discipline
1/2 ironman doubles the bike and the run
      Ironman - doubles the 1/2

If I'm going to run 19 miles I might as well go another 7 just so I can say I ran a marathon. There's little prestige in running a 3/4 marathon and a half marathon is short enough for a lot of people to do without tempting them to run another 13 miles.

As for prestige, I saw a car the other day that had a "3.1" sticker on the window. I think "26.2" stickers are cool but always disliked "13.1" stickers, but a "3.1" sticker?

I have a 26.2 badge (not really a sticker) on my truck. If I manage to finish my half iron this Oct I may opt for a 70.3 sticker. I think that is cool too. 140.6 is a real winner, as is 100.2 (which I've also seen).

What is 100.2? Western States Ultra?

Don't you think it was a joke?
At least the Big Ten went after a big-time addition in Nebraska; the Pac-10 wanted a game so badly, it added Utah

Any ultra. The .2 is to make fun of people like me who think 26.2 is noteworthy.

                  • Speaking of noteworthy...

I defended my title yesterday in my local 4th of July 10k. I was able to just barely stay ahead of my wife and beat her by 12 seconds. We both got plaques for winning, but I was really hoping for a belt buckle like I won last year. I really hope no one fast moves to town, because I have won this thing the last 5 times I have entered.

It was really tough too. http://connect.garmin.com/activity/97005091

I don't have splits set up on my new watch, but I can guarantee that I ran a negative split.

That was the second thought to cross my mind

Nice Piney! You are truly a beast. I was happy with my 4th of July 10k. I went 45:13 on a course that finished with a 2 mile uphill and felt strong for much of the race. Need to work on my mental toughness though, those last 2 uphill miles were tough on my psyche. Here's a pic that I stole off the race's facebook page. All you minimalists will surely note my overstride but please know that the pic was snapped about 100 yards from the finish and I am in the process of giving my last ounce of energy to my meager kick. I battled the last 2 miles with the guy right behind me in this pic. He dropped me with just the last quarter mile to go and then with about 100 meters to go I turned it on and went by him. This pic was snapped after he turned on his jets and is catching me. He ended up going by me like I was standing still with about 25 meters to go. It was a lot of fun.

                        • So what's the deal with the Vibram Five Finger shoes? I know it's somewhere in between standard running shoes and going barefoot. Do they work as a wear-around type shoe as well as running shoe?

I see the doc tomorrow and will hopefully be out of the post-op shoe soon and I'm looking for suggestions on shoes as a resume exercise. Since I had a bone growth on the outside of my foot I need something comfortable and wide.

                          • The heat has been brutal here lately. I hate training in the Summer in Redding.
