Crossfit is hell on previous injuries. It's directly responsible for my last shoulder surgery. The trainers really aren't well trained themselves.

When I was rehabbing my shoulder my therapist talked about all the patients they treat that were injured doing Crossfit. This was at the top sports medicine and therapy facility in Utah.

I am not the biggest fan of Olympic lifts. I am less a fan of doing numerous repetitions of them as fast as you can. That's really where Crossfit gets dangerous. I don't have much issue with the HIIT stuff with bodyweight exercises or even kettle bells.

This is the key reason I stopped. I simply didn't feel comfortable doing sets of olympic lifts for time. In addition, there were a couple of meatheads at the gym who felt it was their duty to get others to put more weight on the bar.

That's the other component about Crossfit culture that is dangerous. Lots of peer pressure and an emphasis on your 1RM. Guys and gals are pushed to do more than is routinely. I see a ton of videos online of guys doing Crossfit with shit form.

A guy at my gym that comes about once a week is that guy. He is cross fit guy and it gets on my nerves. He immediately heads to the bench and grabs the Olympic bar (small gym they only have 1 Olympic bar). He slams it on the floor so everyone can hear him. After each set he drops the bar from about chest high even though we don't have rubber weights. (I also had a run in with him earlier this year at a baseball game, he was coaching an opposing team and we were clearly outmatched, they were up 21-4 and he still had his guys stealing, taking extra bases and bunting.) Yesterday morning he is going through his normal loud and annoying routine (includes the occasional grunt) when he tries to clean 135, loses his balance and crashes in to the bench in front of him. Funniest thing I have seen in a long time. The bar slammed down and he had a pretty good cut on his head. About 20 minutes later I look over and he is back at it with the same amount of weight, and he about eats shit again. This time he manages to get the bar back in to the rack before he tumbled in to the bench.

He shows up today with a bandage on his head when another lady is doing power cleans. He walks up to her and gives her this awkward high five and says "I love you, nobody else here does those, they are so stupid" Not sure why but that made me laugh.

These comments are odd to me. Every gym is different, because no the affiliates are largely independent of corporate crossfit, so you will see variation. But overall, crossfit places very little emphasis on 1 rep maxes. Sure, you see it at the crossfit games, but that's competition. I'd say that over the serveral years I have done crossfit, we would go for a 1 rep max only a couple times a year, on a couple of lifts. it is just not an emphasis.

As far a guys pushing people to add more weight, I see the opposite. Point in fact: We were doing the Isabel WOD on Monday of this week. Isabel is 30 reps for time of snatch at 135# (the dreaded Olympic lift). 135# isn't much weight for me, unless you are asking me to do overhead squats--due to flexibility issues, etc. But you don't have to complete a full overhead squat in this WOD, you can simply do a post snatch. So, I'm about halfway through my snatches, when the instructor brings over some 35# weights. He wants me to decrease the load. But I informed him that I didn't want to and I completed teh workout in just under 5 minutes at 135#. That was not an impressive time and I am not in good shape.

This example is what I've seen time and time again. It is a rare occasion that I've seen anyone push someone to add more weight, and that woudl only occur when the person is strong, has great form, and is really not pushing themselves like they should.

I really never see anyone bragging about their 1RM. And everyone is always encouraging all others despite their strength or skill level. In fact, crossfit will push a 3rm or a 5rm, but not a 1rm. Makes me wonder what kind of gyms you guys were visiting.

Just trying to keep the record straight. I don't doubt anyone had these experiences, but as few of you seem to have done much crossfit, it seems worthwhile to point out that I never see this stuff happen.

They guy was struggling to clean 135#? Obviously not much of a crossiftter.

What the...? I've never seen anything like that. Unbelievable. What are they doing? Why do many of them have their hands reversed? Why are they holding the bar at their mid-abdomen? These people have absolutely no coaching.
