  • I'm starving......and need help...

I just started running again. I say again because ever since high school ended (I was a track star ) I have started and stopped running at least 3 times. I'm committed to sticking with it this time.

However I've noticed that my current running workout and previous diet are not friendly. The result has been that I'm starving most of the day but I'm not sure what to do about it as I don't want to eat snacks all day. Anyway, here's my current routine:

    Breakfast: Granola bar
Lunch: Soup, fruit cup, wheat thins or some other cracker (mabye a visit McDonalds or Chick-fil-a twice a week)
Snack: I'll usually eat some more crackers or pretzels or maybe a Snickers
Dinner: Whatever Mrs. Jones is making at home (usually something good and nutritious with meat/veggies/fruit etc., pretty much a normal dinner meal
Snack: Usually have a bowl of ice cream after running

I run at night so I wake up hungry and it just never wears off. I hate breakfast (especially cereal and oatmeal) but would be open to a protein shake or other "easy to eat at work" snack to tide me over until lunch. I've just never looked into shakes or other protein/carb packed snacks/shakes.

    Thoughts?

String cheese has a fair of amount of protein and not much fat. Two of those make for a decent snack. Pistachios too.

My first recommendation would be to START EATING!

Seriously, you are not eating breakfast or lunch...it's no wonder you are hungry. Soup or a cup of fruit is not a lunch, it is a snack. A granola bar is not breakfast. And it's true what they say--breakfast is the most important meal of the day.

Also, pretzels and crackers are not a good snack, nor is a snickers.

      Here's my recommendation:
Eat some protein for breakfast. Eggs or some other meat.
Eat a small snack between breakfast and lunch (string cheese, nuts, your fruit cup, etc.)
Eat some more protein for lunch (a tuna sandwich, chicken salad, a salad). Really, just about anything is going to be better than a small soup.
The rest of your day looks fine.

If your goal is to lose weight, then you need to cut out the sugary snacks and the pretzels. But if you are a skinny runner, then just eat more.

Unless you are trying to gain muscle (which you are not if you are running), you don't need protein shakes. You just need to eat more.

Bag of baby carrots in your office fridge.

I should say that what I will eventual incorporate into my diet will most likely be at work. I have room in my desk/office to stash anything but I don't have a fridge so string cheese is out. Pistachios are yummy and that would work.

I also walk/run in the evening

Here is what I try to do

Breakfast - appx 2 or 3 carb servings plus 1 of protien

eg a nf yogurt plus a piece of fruit whatever is in season
this is normally at my desk at work

lunch 2 or 3 carb servings

eg open face sandwich and 12 oz can of v8

mid afternoon snack 1 carb serving

eg pc of toast, a cup of milk or a handful of raw nuts

dinner 3 to 4 carb servings
basically whatever I cook for the family

before going to bed 1 or 2 carb servings and some protien
eg cup of milk and a piece of toast or some berries

I try to keep it between 12-15 carb servings per day and follow the food pyramid for guidence on how much to eat for the rest of the food groups.

Following this plan I lost 135 lbs. When I stopped I put 35 back on and have started doing again and have lost 10 of the 35 that I found.

Good luck on getting your diet under control

I may be small, but I'm slow.

Baby carrots kind of creep me out. Carrots aren't supposed to look like that.

Oatmeal. I love oatmeal. I don't understand people that hate it. Have you tried steel cut oats?

Maybe they should be called prepubescent carrots.

I've never tried steel cut oats but maybe I'll try it. I hate oatmeal because of the texture. In fact, I hate most fast breakfasts because of the texture. I think Willy Wonka said it best when he compared breakfast cereal to pencil shavings.

Ha, yeah I didn't need the calories before but now I do so this is good advice. I just need to change my habit of leaving the house before eating something. I've habitually skipped breakfast for a long time. I guess I was spoiled on my mission with fresh pastries and never got back into cereal.

No one says you have to eat breakfast for breakfast. I threw up cold cereal once and then had an aversion to cereal for several years after that. Instead I would eat a sandwich. Danimal thought I was so weird. But what's so different between a peanut butter and jelly sandwich and toast and jam? A lot of times I'd make it the night before and eat it in the car on my way to work. When I had more time, I'd mix it up and have a grilled cheese.
What's to explain? It's a bunch of people, most of whom you've never met, who are just as likely to be homicidal maniacs as they are to be normal everyday people, with whom you share the minutiae of your everyday life. It's totally normal, and everyone would understand.
