    Cycling/Running While Sick

I've been ramping up to do a century next week. Last Wednesday I did a killer ride and felt very drained. Flew to Denver for the weekend, rode and ran every day since my return, but two days ago started coming down with a cold/sore throat, my first in years. Today I'm totally wiped out, and I think I'll sit out today, although I had planned to do a 70-miler tomorrow and that's now in jeopardy which would, in turn, make a full century next week very difficult, if not impossible.

I'm wondering if the tough ride last week may have made me more susceptible to the cold, although I think its cause related more to sitting in an enclosed tube with 140 others for three hours.

When you get a cold (no fever, I don't think), do you still press on or do you rest up and get back to the road once symptoms start to subside?

Depends. I've done the old sweat it out thing and I've also stayed in bed. I can't say as to which got me feeling better faster.

If it's "just" a cold, I try to gut it out and exercise. Sometimes I have to go slower and occasionally head back sooner, but after taking one day off for rest I'm usually best off getting back out there.

I usually feel better having gone out there an gotten a workout in. I would go out and ride, but maybe not expect to get the full 70 in.

If I don't have any nausea, I run anyway.

I have read that endurance athletes are slightly more susceptible to getting sick because your immune system is slightly compromised after a long run or ride. I don't know if that is true.
Awesomeness now has a name. Let me introduce myself.

I've heard it's okay to exercise with a cold but stay home if it's the flu.

I wouldn't worry too much about getting the 70-miler in before the century. Sure, it helps to get acclimated to the distance, but it's not as big of a deal as you'd think. Some of my best centuries came after my longest previous rides of the year had been only 35 miles. At our speed and fitness level, you should be fine.

I run with a cold all the time. Usually I feel better after the run - particularly after the run and a hot shower.

I will admit, that it is usually more draining - so I don't run as far and I am certainly more tired after.

I should clarify - I run as long I don't have a head ache or muscle ache. A stuffy head and runny nose won't stop me.

The Wildflower which covers a hilly, inland course near San Luis Obispo. The full century features 6500 feet of climbing, but there are a couple of bailout points if one can't handle the full ride. We're definitely going to be there. The only question is whether the potential humiliation by Mrs. PAC and her friends (also going) will be enough to impel me to do the whole thing.

we are going to do the metric, probably.

Why didn't you let me know you were in Denver? It would normally not be that big of a deal, but coming on the heels of your thread about having dinner with El Jefe it sends a bit of an El Jefe > DU Ute message. I'm sure you can see why this would kind of bum someone out.
