Whose doing garden this year

Corn, squash, potatoes, tomatoes I think we will plant those this year. Don,t know what else. Decent size. Have raspberries already grown in yard. Also who will raise poultry and other small animals for food as well?

If I plant, I will have green beans. Probably tomatoes and cucumbers. Maybe peppers. Possibly some other stuff.

My wife starts singing this every spring when I remind her that I have spent 200-400 per year with about 75 total worth of food being produced in the past 4 years.

So this year I quoted President Benson: "The living prophet is more important to us than a dead prophet." But is that irony?

We just put in a garden this year. I built some garden boxes, put in Mel's Mix, and lined it out for square foot gardening (128 sf worth). Mrs. Diddley planted everything today. I only got half the drip system in this afternoon after getting home from work--never enough hours in the day.

My neighborhood won't let me raise chickens. Apparently that's what poor people do.

Start-up costs have been fairly high for me. I built garden boxes, $150. I bought a trailer to haul materials, $850. I bought materials for Mel's Mix to put in the garden boxes, $200. I had to run a drip system, $100. I have no idea what Mrs. Diddley spent on all the seeds and plants. $100? I still need to buy the pavers to put in between the two garden boxes, $150. That doesn't count the many hours I put in to make it all happen. I'm sure it'll all pay off in the end.

Although chopping their heads off and watching the dogs chase headless chickens around always made for good entertainment as a kid. Your kids might enjoy that as well.

A couple weekends ago, I was cruising the vicinity of your township on a quest for some rare Japanese Maple tree that I got talked into by my wife for a mother's day gift. We have some friends (well, I think they're friends) here in the city that have a chicken coop in the backyard of their multi-million dollar home on the far side of their very beautiful swimming pool. Of course, they are from west Texas and may not know better. In fact, I think that may be where my wife got the idea of the chickens.

We have always wanted to have a nice vegetable garden and just never had the room for it. With the new house we have room to spare on the side of the house.

Garden area is about 12'x37'. 5 boxes in total.

We planted:

Jalapenos
Bell Peppers
Shallots
Squash
Cucumbers
Watermelons
Broccoli
Carrots
Radishes
Cantaloupe
Tomatoes
Strawberries

Something else that I am forgetting.

I am probably $2000 into the entire project. With the drought we are fighting here...I went with a drip system on the entire setup. Drip system parts aren't cheap, but I didn't want to go cheap and have to redo a bunch of it next year. Next summer the entire thing will cost me about $50 for plants and seeds. Gardening is expensive upfront.

All of the wood is pressure treated. They are 4'x6'x18". LA Ute asked for the dimensions and I hadn't provided them. Sorry about that.
