I know nothing about Washing Machines

      Front loader Kenmore of 10 years won't spin. The noises all sound right, but it won't do anything. I can't decide whether to call and get it repaired for probably >$300 or just go buy a new LG or Samsung for around $1k.

      Anyone have a recommendation?

      I can't really afford a new one, but long-term it might make sense to pay it off over 18 months.

        At the very least I would pull it out from the wall and pop off the access cover and see if anything obvious is broken.

          I never got around to calling the repairman. My uititliy room is really messy and so instead of the embarassment I just bought a new one. They are pretty cheap.

              What do you mean it won't do anything? My machine just stopped one time and I found out the fuse had blown in my fuse box outside.

              Aside from checking that kind of stuff out and doing what Creekster mentioned, I would do one of two things:

              1. Go on to craigslist and buy a used washer. They're pretty cheap and it would at least get you by for awhile. I bought used fridge and stuck it out in my garage. There are a lot of people selling used appliances rather than taking them with them when they move.

              2. My recommendation -- get by for about six weeks with a laundromat. Lowes, Home Depot and Sears on Black Friday have really, really good deals on appliances, especially washers. And no one is standing in line for appliances. They'd rather stand in line at Target for the $2 DVD set of the third season of MacGyver. Sometimes, IIRC the washers are close to 50% off.
              Part of it is based on academic grounds. Among major conferences, the Pac-10 is the best academically, largely because of Stanford, Cal and UCLA. “Colorado is on a par with Oregon,” he said. “Utah isn’t even in the picture.”

                It won't spin. It definitely has power. You might not know this, but I live in the exact middle of Nowhere. Craigslist, you say? cowboy and Tim can testify that this place is so rural we go into Florence, SC to see the "city."

                      She's dead, Jim.

                      I bought a subscription to Consumer Reports since I also need new tires for the Odyssey.

                      We like front loading because of how clean the clothes get, it's gentler on them, and they come out almost dry so you don't have to dry them for as long.

                      These are all ranked as "Best Buys." Does anyone have any experience with these models?

                        We went to Lowe's at 4PM. There were two Samsung WF350ANW



                        that had been returned. New ones were going for $846. I paid $571 out the door. I loaded into my van, brought it home, it fit the old pedestal for our old washer, hosed it up, and BAM!

                        It even has a 1-year warranty even though it was a return. Basically, it cost me $121 more for a newer more-reliable washer vs. fixing the 10 y/o one.

                        All-in-all, I'm happy. But, I had to charge it since I JUST bought new tires for the van and the DirectLoans program mistakenly withdrew $950 from my checking account due to a clerical error. It takes them 4-6 weeks to return the money.

                        Cash poor, but able to wash clothes again.

                                Maybe, but I was so fed up by then that I just spent the money and got a 10 year warranty. Besides, the 1 year warranty was parts only I found out.
