When our 2nd counselor was released about a year ago, the very next Sunday he came to church with a goatee and orange shirt.Originally posted by LA Ute View PostWhen I finally am released from the bishopric I plan to wear blue, pink or striped shirts every week for at least a few months.

Is the white shirt mandatory, self imposed, or is it just "strongly suggested?" I've always wondered if and/or how they communicate such vital information to new bishoprics.Originally posted by LA Ute View PostWhen I finally am released from the bishopric I plan to wear blue, pink or striped shirts every week for at least a few months.Dio perdona tante cose per un’opera di misericordia

I can speak only for myself. We've never been instructed to do it. When I am in church as a bishopric member I wear a white shirt simply out of respect for the office and to avoid being a distraction. Also, since the Aaronic Priesthood boys who pass the sacrament are supposed to wear white shirts, I feel that I ought to as well. After all, the bishopric presides over the AP.Originally posted by pellegrino View PostIs the white shirt mandatory, self imposed, or is it just "strongly suggested?" FWIW, I really like a nice crisp white shirt, and I consider that the most formal type of shirt and the least likely to call attention to me (the old theory being that the man should wear the clothes, the clothes should not wear the man). Even so, I wear them at work only if I have an important meeting or am going to court.
I have a partner who was a bishop and refused to wear white shirt. His SP pushed him on it, but he pushed back and never had to change. He served the full 5 years. It doesn't matter that much to me. Some hills are worth dying on, but for me that isn't one of them.Last edited by LA Ute; 08-03-2009, 02:20 PM.“There is a great deal of difference in believing something still, and believing it again.”

When I was called into the branch presidency in New Orleans, they asked me to shave my beard, and I did. Now, I would tell them 'no."
I was asked to wear a suit, and I refused. I settled on a white shirt and suit pants, but no way in hell I was ever wearing a suit again for anything other than a wedding, a funeral, or a job interview. I wore the most obnoxius-yet-compelling ties I could find in the thrift stores.
Now, I use the boot for my heel spur as an excuse to not wear pants to Church. Since a shirt and tie with shorts looks stupid, I wear a white guayabera. I'm almost hoping that the heel spur lasts a while longer, but that's dumb.
I do think that my change of wardrobe had a lot to do with my getting released as elders' quorum president."Wuap's "problem" is that he is smart & principled & committed to a moral course of action. His actions are supposed to reflect his ethical code.

I'm a big fat man, little boy. What works for my back-in-black brothers does not look so good when stretched across this fearsome frame.Originally posted by I.J. Reilly View PostWell, consider yourself told. Also, shorts and a tie can be a very nice combo when done right. Exhibit A:

So let me understand. A wedding, funeral or job interview are more important (or whatever term you want to use) that Sunday worship when it comes to attire?Originally posted by wuapinmon View PostWhen I was called into the branch presidency in New Orleans, they asked me to shave my beard, and I did. Ah, yes, the guayabera, a time-honored tradition. They were everywhere in El Salvador.Originally posted by wuapinmon View PostWhen I was called into the branch presidency in New Orleans, they asked me to shave my beard, and I did. Now, I would tell them 'no."

I still like a nice, pressed white shirt now and then. As long as the collar fits.“There is a great deal of difference in believing something still, and believing it again.”
