Falafel, I recommend that you pick up a copy of Planted by Patrick Mason. It is a great treatise on faith and doubt in an LDS context and one of the main features of the book is dealing with LDS history. Mason is a history prof (formerly at ND, now at Claremont) so he is particularly good at exploring those issues.
