He'll learn some new farm animal noises. It'll be great.

Be prepared for him to ask why you aren't so keen on the 2nd Amendment.

My argument that Deliverance isn't good for a kid (anyone) to see.

Robin, thanks for sharing that wonderful experience. She's good people. If little Robin wants to listen to some innovative banjo music you need to introduce him to Bela Fleck. Also, if you insist on showing Deliverance to little Robin then make sure he understands the word stereotype and how the stereotypes presented in that film are a gross misrepresentation of what the South is and what it never was.

Acting on my own authority, I hereby grant you the title of CUF Colonel. Only people born or raised in the South may grant this peerage. You may style yourself The Right Honorable Colonel pellegrino, or His Worshipfulness pellegrino; the choice is yours. It carries no rights or privileges other than I promise to take you out to dinner, on me, if I can ever figure out a way to bring you to Coker as an invited speaker.

Just pellegrino is fine. I've never been one for titles, I don't even let my students call me dr. But I might put this one in my sig line. I'd be happy to come to Coker, but if I'm going to be an invited speaker make sure the college pays for it, we have to take care of the few "french" benefits our profession affords us.

I expect to see vids of that kid ripping something Scruggs style in the near future. What a great gift!

For the record, Deliverance is not about southerners. It is about mountain folk. I live in a place were there are a fair number of both. Big difference.

I think you're right. We have a small Appalachian community here and there is no comparison.

I missed out on this thread. With one reference to Deliverance, Colly Wolly hijacks the thread. Even 37 years or so after the fact, Deliverance still packs a punch. It's still probably the most shocking movie I've ever seen.

The idiot savant playing the banjo should have had a longer movie career. No one has ever portrayed inbreeding better.
Part of it is based on academic grounds. Among major conferences, the Pac-10 is the best academically, largely because of Stanford, Cal and UCLA. “Colorado is on a par with Oregon,” he said. “Utah isn’t even in the picture.”

And a bittersweet reminder of perhaps our nation's greatest tragedy: slavery. That symbol of "Americana" was first produced by African slaves based on instruments from their original homes. It then found its way into the American mainstream, sadly, in large part via early minstrel shows, and then via soldiers returning home after the Civil War.

See, NPR is good for something.

I grew up in the South, wuap is lucky he didn't get challenged to a duel for what he was implying. Lebowski is still ready to stand as my second.
