    Calling and election made sure

Is it true that there is some bizarre temple ordinance in which one's calling and election is made sure? I heard lots of rumors about this while I was in the MTC.

This reminds me of a problem I had in the MTC. Every P-day all the missionaries in my district would spend ALL their free time doing sealings and extra endowment sessions. I had this theory that they were doing sealings because of a subconscious drive to hold a girl's hand. But the whole thing really pissed me off because I had to beg someone to leave the temple every week after our single obligatory endowment session was complete.

Also, there was a Marriott in my MTC district who gave us all a lecture about how garments protect you if you obey the rules. I told him that this was an offensive belief, especially to any missionary (or other Mormon for that matter) who was harmed while wearing his garmies. So one day after an endowment session I was chilling on the couch in the Celestial Room, pondering all things secular, while this pompous Marriott sat down next to me and leaned over with this creepy look on his face. Twilight zone music started playing in my head as he emphatically whispered: "SEE, they DO protect you!!!"

If ever there was a perfect time for a "dead leg" in the Celestial Room, that was it.

I read the journal of an ancestor who mentions the bishop asking him if wanted his second endowment, he made it seem routine

My mission trainer was from Darnestown, MD....if you're in the area and know any Lorenzanas, he's one of them. Anyway, one of the Marriott was in his YM Presidency, and he got burned really bad in some sort of boating accident, and according to my companion, the burns aren't under the garments, only on free skin.....so that might be the source of the Marriott guy's weirdness about them.

As far as calling and election made sure goes, I thought that was when God or Jesus showed up to you and by seeing them, you knew you had progressed to the point where your salvation was guaranteed, so to speak.

            Brueger's book talks about this.

I was taking out a big bush in my yard a few months back. Yellow jackets swarmed. Ouch.

I posted some questions about it here

but as you can see, they didn't get much response. These were questions that had been posed to me and I wondered what the general CUF wisdom was on the topic. No one had anything to say.

Which makes me wonder, just out of curiosity, who was the youngest person to have this done?

In an ancestor's paper genealogical records we found this notation:

"On [date], [names of husband and wife] received their second blessings in the Salt Lake Temple."

We've always wondered exactly what that is all about.

I don't think that is so uncommon. I've heard it referred to second endowment, second blessings, second annointings, etc. There are supposed accounts of such on the internet. I had a brief discussion with Gidget's branch president before we were married about it. He essentially didn't believe such an ordinance existed. I left it at that.

This would be the key. As it now stand, the normal endowment is very emphatic that you are only taking out your endowments with the possibility of one day becoming. This would be the fulfillment of that possibility.

                              According to this webpage:

                              Marion Romney said this:
"After a person has faith in Christ, repents of his sins, and is baptized for the remission of his sins and receives the Holy Ghost, (by the laying on of hands), which is the first Comforter, then let him continue to humble himself before God, hungering and thirsting after righteousness, and living by every word of God, and the Lord will soon say unto him, `Son, thou shalt be exalted.' When the Lord has thoroughly proved him, and finds that the man is determined to serve Him at all hazards, then the man will find his calling and his election made sure, then it will be his privilege to receive the other Comforter, which the Lord hath promised the Saints, as is recorded in the testimony of St. John....

                              AND Joseph Smith said this:

"Now what is this other Comforter? It is no more nor less than the Lord Jesus Christ Himself; and this is the sum and the substance of the whole matter; that when any man obtains this last Comforter, he will have the personage of Jesus Christ to attend him, or appear unto him from time to time, and even He will manifest the Father unto him, and they will take up their abode with him, and the visions of the heavens will be opened unto him, and the Lord will teach him face to face, and he may have a perfect knowledge of the mysteries of the Kingdom of God; and this is the state and place the ancient Saints arrived at when they had such glorious visions--Isaiah, Ezekiel, John upon the Isle of Patmos, St. Paul in the three heavens, and all the Saints who held communion with the general assembly and Church of the Firstborn."
TPJS, Deseret Book Co. 1979, pp. 150,151.
