Nope, I gotta stand behind my post. Some sisters live on Facebook. If they dont write about it on FB, it didn't happen. If I follow their posts and their kids posts, I know more about what is happening in their lives (both good and bad) than if I visit once a month.

Actually, I'm not sure what the purpose of VT is. If it is to support and encourage some sister, FB does it. If it is to spy on their homes to make sure their front parlor is tidy, then a physical visit is the better option.

What would you do for sisters that don't facebook much? And therefore would not see your weekly encouragement? My wife, for example.
Ain't it like most people, I'm no different. We love to talk on things we don't know about.

From what I can tell, the main purpose of visiting teaching is to spread gossip.

Its not that I am proposing FB replace visits, it's just that no one will even consider alternative methods, such as FB or other social interaction.

Don't you self report? I've never been in a ward that has defined what constitutes a visit for home teaching. I think it varies in each case.

Our HP group leader defines Home Teaching as an in-home visit. But we do self report, so if I don't agree with that definition I can report whatever I want. I have reported in the past that I had a telephone conversation with a family and weren't able to find a time to visit, but they were doing great, and they would not count it as a visit for that month. When I was EQP, I woudl have counted it.

It's just a metric, so I suppose it depends on what the leaders want to measure. It's much more than visiting in the home once a month.

You better get started on that front parlor.

I got into a scrape with my HP group leadership 3-4 years ago. I mentioned that I liked to do a variety of things with my families, including inviting the families over for BBQ or ice cream, dinner in the park up the canyon, cookie decorating with the kids, etc. They (one in particular) told me that I could go on doing that, but unless I reported an in-home visit with a lesson and a prayer, they weren't going to count it as home teaching. I laughed and told him I couldn't care less whether or not he "counted" my home teaching. He reported me to the bishop and the bishop told him to knock it off.

There's certainly a place for in home visits with a lesson and a prayer, but if that's all you care about happening, you have a very narrow view of what home teaching can accomplish.

My home teachers haven't been inside of my house in 2.5 years and yet they report themselves as 50% home teachers

In all honesty, this seems to be the best solution. Don't visit and count it. Win/win
