Where performance is measured, performance improves. Where performance is measured and reported back, the rate of improvement accelerates.

Is he speaking as the prophet there or as an organizational behaviorist? If he's speaking as the prophet, is he prophesying that the rate of improvement WILL improve with additional measurement and reporting? If he's speaking from an organizational perspective, where's the data to back that up? I imagine everyone here as personal evidence that suggests the opposite is true.Visca Catalunya Lliure

Reporting the % of home teaching done (defined as in the home, giving a lesson, saying a prayer) is not reporting performance. It's a "check the box" mentality. Performance is developing a relationship, caring for the family and providing Christ-like service. Not much of that is shown in the current reporting.Originally posted by Northwestcoug View PostWith all due respect to President Monson (and countless other authorities, both general and local), has the home teaching performance improved significantly in the last few decades? Have we become better home teachers? In what concrete areas have you seen an accelerated rate of improvement? If so, could someone please tell my EQP's, Bishops, stake leaders, etc. of the last 20 years? Please let them know about the progress made. Becuase they are still making an almost intolerable 3rd hour even less tolerable, by constantly trying to improve our performance.
If reporting really helps performance, then I'd say the baseball baptisms were a success!"Discipleship is not a spectator sport. We cannot expect to experience the blessing of faith by standing inactive on the sidelines any more than we can experience the benefits of health by sitting on a sofa watching sporting events on television and giving advice to the athletes. And yet for some, “spectator discipleship” is a preferred if not primary way of worshipping." -Pres. Uchtdorf

Ah, I'm glad that's cleared up. I eagerly await when the significant improvement in performance (i.e. HT percentage) for the last 50 years will be reported, in that it will show a clear upward trend.Originally posted by Moliere View PostReporting the % of home teaching done (defined as in the home, giving a lesson, saying a prayer) is not reporting performance. Not squarely on topic by any means, but home teaching responsibilities weighed heavily at our ward dinner Saturday. It was our annual fundraising auction at which our bishop puts up for bid a variety of sports memorabilia, along with the usual cakes and food items. I was dueling with an older woman whom I home teach for a football that was autographed by Lavell Edwards, Steve Young and Ty Detmer. The bidding was lively, and I was about to make a higher bid when she turned around and shouted, "You're my home teacher, and if you bid me up you will have utterly failed in your calling." I withdrew, and she got the ball.
The next item was four tickets to next winter's BYU game at either St. Mary's or Santa Clara, to be squired to and from by Mark Bigelow, who had obtained permission for the group to meet with Coach Rose and the rest of the team in the locker room. I was about to be outbid by my home teacher, but a dirty look, couple with the assurance I would give him full credit for visits for the next three months, resulted in his withdrawal and a winning bid for me. I have a testimony of home teaching.

I didn't get the goosebumps but a laugh is just as good. I too now have a testimony.

I'm not advocating abandoning VT. I do like the idea of a H W team where possible. And they don't have to go together. Make friends with people. Get to know them. Have them for dinner. Rotate assignments every so often. This will also help to build greater friendships in the ward.Originally posted by creekster View PostOh I agree. But it would be more difficult to do if you eliminate the VT program. I think my bishop optimizes it pretty well as described above.Awesomeness now has a name. Let me introduce myself.

Yeah, whatever. Show me how your going to measure me and I'll show you how I will perform. If your only measurement is numbers, I'll give you a number every month. Which is pretty much what I do now. I unabashedly admit this.Originally posted by Sullyute View PostPresident Monson:Awesomeness now has a name. Let me introduce myself.

We have a new bishop. Apparently, this is getting rolled out again. Wednesday makes 25 years since I joined the Church; I'll be shocked if I make it to 2018 without getting exed for speaking my mind and not sustaining shit like this."Wuap's "problem" is that he is smart & principled & committed to a moral course of action. I wonder if PAC still maintains a mancrush on Bigelow.
I really hate VT and feel it is outmoded. I think it was developed back in the horse and buggy days when the only church influence came in visits from members, or on Sunday. I dont see why facebook friending my assignments and then offering them weekly encouragement on Facebook is not more effective.

For all this His anger is not turned away, but His hand is stretched out still.
Not long ago an obituary appeared in the Salt Lake Tribune that said the recently departed had "died doing what he enjoyed most—watching BYU lose."
