Holland's talk last night was great and well needed. The home teaching program has turned into a numbers game, which is caused mostly by stake and area leaders that only care about the % home taught. It wasn't just a rebuke of those at the ward level that don't home teach, but those that focus on the numbers. His talk was fabulous and with the perfect tone. Dare I say that I enjoyed his talk even more than Uchtdorf's? Yes, I did.

The home teaching program doesn't really need to be revamp, the emphasis just needs to change from percentages to people.
"Discipleship is not a spectator sport. We cannot expect to experience the blessing of faith by standing inactive on the sidelines any more than we can experience the benefits of health by sitting on a sofa watching sporting events on television and giving advice to the athletes. And yet for some, “spectator discipleship” is a preferred if not primary way of worshipping." -Pres. Uchtdorf

I don't see this from my vantage point. We've had excellent training by our stake and area on the subject.

      J. Devn Cornish yesterday said, "the god of heaven is not a heartless referee, looking for any excuse to throw us out of the game" *cough* Omaha *cough* Moliere *cough*

Seriously though, I enjoyed all the talks from conference yesterday morning, especially Sister McConkie's and Elder Uceda. I'm going to need to watch most of the afternoon session again, as I had to go help a friend.

Edit: PH session was great too.

I was out during p-hood session but a friend kept texting me about this talk so I watched it on the DVR last night. I agree, it was excellent.

I had a big fight with my HP group leadership a few years back about this issue. I had a great relationship with my families and we were doing BBQs and other activities together as opposed to in-home visits on many months. The guy to whom I was supposed to report my HT told me that none of that stuff "counted" and I was supposed to do an in-home visit with message/prayer etc each month. I told him that I loved my families and this system was working so I wasn't going to change how I was doing it and I couldn't care less what "counted". He reported me to the bishop (who ignored it) and tried to make a big deal about it. He even sent an e-mail to the entire HP group: "It has come to my attention that some of you...".

So this talk was sweet vindication.

BTW, I tweaked the thread title to make it less generic.

A lot of you might have recognized the story he told about Austen and Troy Russell. Troy is a CB poster who has documented the saga in some detail on that board. The way the BYU sports community rallied around that family is incredible.

Whatever other messages were given last night were lost on me. After hearing that awful story again I was a wreck.

The one other message that resonated with me was the one about the person who left the church and was actively railing against the church on message boards. Someone was patient with him and prayed for him for ten years. It made me wonder if I should be praying for SU.

As the story went on, I wondered if he was actually talking about SU as it was about an accomplished attorney. Has SU come back to the church without us knowing? Maybe that is why he is so concerned about BYU's current direction.

Either way, SU I'm praying for you. You're a great guy and I've really enjoyed you here on the board. I'm praying for the rest of you too.

I felt a lot better after hearing it too.

I'm still waiting for the announcement that section 89 is reinstated as the WoW.

Elder Ballard talking to those who "walk no more with the Saints".

That's one of the major themes this time, maybe the major theme. I don't care for Ballard's approach here though; it's appealing to fear and is the sort of thing that sounds good to those who are comfortably in the church, but that pushes those on the margins away.

                          2016 October General Conference thread

Now that BKP is gone, is MRB the leader in the "thinking has been done" clubhouse? He generally gives my least favorite GC talks.

Also, I may or may not have laughed at the thought of BKP telling a group of people that he can't think of any sons he hasn't repented of.

There's three rules that I live by: never get less than twelve hours sleep; never play cards with a guy who's got the same first name as a city; and never go near a lady's got a tattoo of a dagger on her body. Now you stick to that, everything else is cream cheese. --Coach Finstock
