Who else is going to do anything about it? You can't force the university to change the system to your liking. They will make whatever changes they feel are best and warranted. That it doesn't live up to your personal expectation is irrelevant.Originally posted by mpfunk View PostThat is putting a lot of trust in an organization that hasn't really acted in a manner that inspires trust. I guess it is better than the current option, but it still give the rapist the tool to silence a victim.

I sincerely hope you have never once in your life casually joked about someone dropping the soap or your team getting bent over by a crappy ref.Originally posted by mpfunk View PostSo I'm the problem not the person comparing losing an online argument to rape and child abuse. Okay.

He's making you the subject of the joke.Originally posted by mpfunk View PostI probably have and now if I did and someone called me on it, I would like would recognize it was wrong.
Patton Oswalt had a great article discussing rape jokes. The problem with old Gregg is he is making the victim the subject of the joke, not the perpetrator. He is also minimizing something horrific by comparing it to something that isnt horrific.

Krakauer's book Missoula was really eye-opening for me regarding rape culture on college campuses. I put off reading it for months because it seems like a such a downer topic but I highly recommend it.
After reading that book I concluded that as fanatical and weird as the Honor Code is, there is no doubt that BYU is much, much safer for young women because of the Honor Code and its enforcement. This idea among the SLTrib commenter types that rapists are running wild at BYU because girls are afraid of Honor Code prosecution is really dumb. I would think the Honor Code prevents dozens of rapes for every one that it "facilitates" by making women afraid to report (if that phenomenon even occurs at all).
I agree with those here who said it would be good to just leave Honor Code enforcement up to the Bishops and abolish the Honor Code office -- you get an Ecclesiastical Endorsement and you are good. Short of that, then I agree with CJ that temporary/conditional amnesty where the Honor Code office suspends any investigation until after the rape investigation/prosecution makes sense.

Not really. I don't think jokes of that nature have any real impact of the real issue, which is that rape is bad.Originally posted by mpfunk View PostSure and he is doing it by saying that I'm in the position of a rape victim.
