That Atlantic article was well written. This isn't a problem where I teach, but if the Dept. of Education keeps meddling, it could be. We already aren't allowed to speak unfavorably about war because we might offend veterans. The road to hell is paved with good intentions."Wuap's "problem" is that he is smart & principled & committed to a moral course of action. His actions are supposed to reflect his ethical code.
The rest of us rarely bother to think about our actions." --Solon

A speaker is disinvited from giving a lecture at Williams College because her views on feminism might be offensive to some students. And get this: the event is part of the "Uncomfortable Learning" lecture series, which was created for the precise purpose of exposing the students to different viewpoints. Bloody hell..."There is no creature more arrogant than a self-righteous libertarian on the web, am I right? Those folks are just intolerable."

Whenever I invite someone to speak on campus, I do so with the explicit understanding that they must set aside at least 15 minutes for question-and-answer sessions. If it ever happened here that people started saying that we should disinvite someone because we disagreed with their opinions, I would counter that all voices belong in the academy, no matter how odious or uncomfortable we might find them. And, we should use our Q&A session, a moderated one, to refute anything spurious or otherwise annoying/offensive the person said. May it never come to that. Generally, in the South, this stuff isn't as severe. But, I'm getting old.Originally posted by Jeff Lebowski View PostHere is another one:

If I were invited to speak at Williams, I would decline the invitation because I wouldn't want to speak at any institution that would be comfortable with having me speak.Originally posted by Jeff Lebowski View PostHere is another one:

The Atlantic generally overstates its arguments. Remember that series by James Fallows that said Japan was trying again to take over the world again but with belligerent trade practices. That is typical, as is this article. It's high brow sensationalism. I don't like it.When a true genius appears, you can know him by this sign: that all the dunces are in a confederacy against him.

Here is one of the series of articles I mentioned, which actually looks more racist in retrospect than it did at the time. On the cover there was a caricature of a sumo wrestler.
