  • Elder Scott Passes Away

Elder Scott passed away from old age this afternoon. I think he and Jeanene will have a nice reunion.

Elder Scott came and visited us in the mission field not long after he was called as an apostle. It was pretty cool to have an apostle there, and he took the time to stop and shake hands with every single missionary in 2 missions who were in attendance. He spoke to us in Spanish - which the locals really appreciated in spite of his heavy gringo accent.

After I returned home I remember his first 3-4 conference talks being about child/spouse abuse. Rough.

I can't say he was ever one of my favorite speakers, but I appreciated his drawing attention to something that is often overlooked.

    He'll be missed.

Interesting that we are likely looking at 3 new apostles in a couple of weeks. That's a pretty good sized voting block joining the council of the twelve.

      One of my favorites.

He visited my mission a couple times and gave some inspiring talks. Always enjoyed listening to his insight.
Will donate kidney for B12 membership.

It will be interesting to see how many of the new apostles being called will be from outside the U.S.

I met him at a regional conference with Monson back in the day. He was a class act, but I always disliked the stare down he gave to the camera.

Prayers for his family. I generally disliked his talks, but when he spoke of losing his wife and a child four or five years ago, I was reduced to tears. For the first time I felt like he was speaking from his heart instead of rehearsing well chosen words.

RIP. His talks and penetrating gaze did not resonate with me, but you could tell he spoke from the heart.

In this thread: a lot of guilty folks who couldn't handle the stare-master.

Like multiple commenters, I got to listen to Elder Scott as a missionary when he visited my mission. He spoke to us in Portuguese. I remember that it was a great experience.

guilt has nothing to do with it, he broke the 4th wall! Since when did conference become avant garde theater?

He told a story once of how he used to avoid eye contact and his first wife insisted that he learn to look people directly in the eye. Mission accomplished!

Bro, is this the Church of the 12 Apostles? No. There is only one vote, JC.

Not really sad news given his failing health and his desire to return to his wife. Conference won't be the same without his staring gaze and talks on sexual purity. I will miss him in a way.

I do wonder if they will call three lily white Mormons from the inter mountain west....maybe they'll even be lawyers or from CES.

Was that his battle horse? I honestly don't remember the topics of any of his talks, too distracted by the stare.
