  • Editor of the Deseret News?

    Joe Cannon is crazy.

He could use a lesson in historical methods. Maybe he should stick to dumping toxic materials into Utah Lake.

He's not nearly as qualified as John Hughes was.

I didn't think the first half of the essay was really that bad.

But jumping from the topic of genocide to the birth control pill is what the psychiatrists call a "loose association." Strange.

I'll agree with you that the first half seemed like it could be going somewhere but then he made the jump and really lost steam from there.

I find it disconcerting that there are still anti-contraceptive messages being published in semi-official organs.

Should there be no stated opinions against contraception?

I don't mind people holding opinions and beliefs against contraception. Making their personal fertility decisions is certainly their prerogative, it's more the semi-official nature of it all. Publishing in the Mormon Times, as the editor of the Deseret News, it could be construed by some to be an official stance of some sort. He can hold all the beliefs he wants and I don't even mind him publishing them, but a little disclaimer would be nice.

That's a fair point, though reasonable people would know that an opinion piece is only an opinion - with reasonable being the operative word here.

I agree with you that most will recognize it is simply an opinion piece. On the other hand, would we expect to see an opinion piece arguing that people should limit family size?

It is just the same dynamic you see in Sunday school. People are comfortable espousing views that are more conservative than the norm or the doctrine, but not more liberal. Nothing to see here really.

Joe Cannon is a tool. The genocide corrolary is offensive when you consider the real examples of genocide. If you want to argue that line with abortion, fine, but birth control?!?!?

"What is absolutely clear, however, is the enormous suffering that is the consequence of this interference in the divine institution of marriage. Since the 1960s there has been staggering deterioration in all relevant social indicators, such as abortions, out-of-wedlock births, divorce, spouse abuse, birth rates, premarital and extramarital sexual activity."

Clearly all of this is due to birth control. I would argue the opposite in regards to abortion.

What do you expect from "The Mormon Times."

Why do you call it a "semi-"official organ?

It is not the Ensign, not quite the Church News, but is probably a half-step up from the Deseret News. I don't think that editorial control over the Mormon Times reaches the Ensign level. You couldn't hold the words in there up as doctrine. In my mind all of these things combine to make it "semi"-official, as it is still owned and opperated by the church.

So the Mormon Times is not the LDS Church kind of like BYU is not the LDS Church?
